SB Nation's Steven Godfrey reports Georgia Southern is leaving FCS for the Sun Belt and confirms the Winston-Salem Journal's report of Appalachian State doing the same.
Two of the most prominent teams in the second tier of college football will be moving up, as Georgia Southern and Appalachian State are leaving the FCS' Southern Conference for the Sun Belt of the FBS, a source tells SB Nation's Steven Godfrey. Godfrey reports GSU will make the full move in 2015, with a transitional season in 2014 and no change to its 2013 schedule.

The Sun Belt wanted to bring in existing rivals, and the relationship between App State and Southern intrigued the conference, according to a source.

What this says is that being in the lowest rated 1-A conference is more respectable than winning a 1-AA national championship. This is a great move for both schools. You can't make money or get recognition unless to go where the money and recognition are!

Both will be unheard of in a few years like Marshall... they were able to compete a couple of seasons then just fell off the map. Its the SUN BELT.

Yup! And here we are still wallowing in obscurity! One day "us" will get the big picture!

Sun Belt has some interesting rivalries in the making. Troy vs South Alabama can really grow if promoted properly.

Nope.
What this says is they have been working towards this on and off the field for years and FCS football has run its course for them. The SUNBELT wanted THEM because they were #1 GOOD and #2, the rivalry they bring to the conference. Why would they turn down a "package" opportunity like this? Unlike us, they not going to stand pat for 100 years. Appy State, Georgia Southern and Montana has been flirting with moving up since 2005.

In the SWAC, we act like if we make a move, if the SEC don't call us, (sarcasim), it would be an insult to go to a conference like the Sunbelt in a move up. 99% of ya'll would sneer at a SWAC school moving up to con-USA yet there is not one school in this conference that will come close to beating the last place team in that league.

Baby steps.............

Or, they could end up like Western Kentucky who has a good basketball program, finishes well in football and beats SEC doormat Kentucky. Ask them if they'd rather be FCS right now and they'd laugh at you. Or they could end up like ULL, playing in a bowl game in front of 50k people getting 10 times the exposure that they do now. There's really not even one benefit of staying FCS for either team.

But who moved to the Southland. You must mean the Sunbelt

Two of the more successful FCS programs moving up to a FBS conference that has had some key wins OOC in the regular season and bowl games. Make sense to me...

Plus they needed someone to replace MTSU.

True but I bet you couldn't pay Marshall to come back to 1-AA. Being 4-8 in 1-A is just as good as been 12-0 in 1-AA. That is just the way of the football world. The only thing I see wrong with this is that GaSouthern really ain't 1-A material. They are a country 1-AA school down to the bone. They are not nationally appealing at all. App State has some national appeal.

They don't have no dayum rivalry. That is some made up bull that made the article sound good. Montana and University of Delaware would be the next logical choices to move but, still being honest, they are really 1-AA material. Also, the Sunbelt wanted them because is all about survival at this point. In 2013, bigger is better. We all know that that Big 12 is sitting back like a Volcano waiting to erupt. They ain't made a SINGLE move in conference realignment but when they do, I think the world gonna end...

No. NDSU is the next logical choice, IMHO. :read: Facilities, $$$$, expanding, fanbase, ...

Hella' good move for AppySt and GaSu.

I don't necessarily agree that no one will know who they are. These are the type of teams that ever so often (kind of like Louisiana-Monroe did this year) will pull upsets and have people take notice. I look at these two schools kind of like Louisiana-Lafayette (they have beaten Texas A&M and Oklahoma State), Southern Miss. and LA. Tech.

The Big 12?
You talking about the BIG 12 with Texas and Oklahoma right.

The BIG 12 could not draw teams when everybody and their momma was trying to buy a ticket to somewhere else. They could not even keep 4 of their own teams from breaking camp. All of the BIG BEAST Schools have been beasted up by the Big 10, Pac 12 and SEC.

Who in the world is left out there for the Big 12 to get that would make someone go OH MY. Big 12 better keep their eye and the gate locked on Oklahoma.

Ga Southern tried this once and it didn't work out for them. Maybe they can make it work in FBS now, we will see. But lets not talk about any HBCU doing anything close to this. #Bloomwhereplanted.

NDSU can't go nowhere unfortunately that makes sense geographically...the WAC died and their not considered PAC 12 or Big 10 material.

They will make more money. They will also have to spend more money too.

Marshall was very strong in 1-AA. They had Randy Moss when they went up to 1-A too.

Nope.

They have been taking baby steps for a long time. When Georgia Southern re-started their football program after 40 years, they went after and got Erk Russell, the popular defensive coordinator from Georgia. Russell won three national titles in a five-year period ('85, '86, and '89). They won three more with present Georgia Tech Coach Paul Johnson winning two of them. Appalachian State won three consecutive titles.

Basically, they raised money, publicized their program, made plans and are making a move. We will see how successful it will be for them on and off the field in the FBS. Our schools could learn a lesson or two from them.

ummm 99,
when was GaSou D1? I remember when they started that program in the 80s. It started as a 1-AA team

So I guess Ga tech will be number three in FBS in the state of Georgia now. Poor Tech.
