Deuce,
The Olympics in Atlanta were horrible. I hated it. They weren't what I expected. They didn't "feel" like other Olympics.
feel better now?
sheesh
I agree. IMO, the biggest single physical change was what is now Centennial Park and the area around it. That whole area was desolate, mostly nothing but abandoned warehouses that were being used by homeless people and Techwood Homes. While we are speaking on the 96 Olympics, Atlanta changed a lot since then. I would say from 92-96 brought a lot of change in the city.

btw, during the 2 week period of the actual games, the AJC put out a special Olympic edition each day. I still have each one and a bunch of other stuff.

Man, me and my brother walked right by that stage 5 minutes before it went off. I wanted to stay and watch the show (cause we stopped by THAT stage), but my brother wanted to keep walking. I actually saw the bookbag that the bomb was in. Thought about going to pick it up and giving it to the authorities.I was suppose to be in the park the night the bomb went off but my ex and I were to tired after working 12 hours and driving over from Augusta. We hung out the next day but the crowds were scattered because the park was closed and underground did not open until late that afternoon. But since it was the Olympics my ex was still satisified that she could tell everyone that we were at the Olympics. Ticketholders were selling gold medal event tickets at face value but I had other plans for that weekend. The people I did see seem to be enjoying themselves even after the tragic event from the previous night.

LOLMan tell me about it, but every time I say something about Atl, folks run in here, man Atlanta ain't got this or that. That is because they no nothing about the old Atl. They only know the commercial Atl after the Olympics. It was the best thing to ever happen to Atl. They finally cleaned up the city and left Bama really far behind. Bham and the Gump never recovered from the airport deal, but when the Olympics came, it left them even further behind.
beans,Thought about going to pick it up and giving it to the authorities.
We almost went to the Atlanta Olympics because it was close. Glad we didn't after seeing all the negative feedback that came after the games. Not to mention the Centenial Park Bombing. :smh:
Man it blows me away BB. I remember coming to Bama in 89 and was like wow, is this a third world nation. Bham still looks like it did in 89. :shame: Atl was a different city back then. Actually it is safer to go out at night now.
beans,
You could've been the hero.... Or made the scapegoat.
:lol:I could see Beans now all roughed up by the po po's. :emlaugh:

We had been out there earlier that day too, but left early in the evening. I still remember staying up all night watching the news coverage, stunned at what happened.Dude after it exploded, we actually thought it was part of the show. I saw the smoke and everything. I told my brother I knew we should have stayed and watched the show. When we got home and saw the news, I thanked God cause I definitely could had been killed.

imagine a black man trying to explain it AFTER the fact. You see how they did poor Richard Jewell.
You are dead on! Me being a Historian I thrive on changes made then and now. 1994 Centennial Park View attachment 1796
The Publix is gone now. In its place, a new Wal Mart is going up. That area is about to really take off now. Just think, a Walmart, a marta station, all within a stone's throw from downtown. To see where The condos and the Publix are on MLK across the street from Paschals Hotel. Man James B. Brawley they way it is now.

All that has been cleared out. There are some new businesses and restaurants along that stretch. Also, a couple of weeks ago, the council approved plans for a huge green space/park a couple blocks over on Simpson, on the end close by the Dome.Is Seller Brothers funeral home still there? I think Bronner Brothers moved to huh?
