If it was up to me, I would have kick Mississippi Valley out of the SWAC that year (1984). That is the year when you dummies went to the I-AA playoffs and had nearly 70 points scored on you by LA. Tech. I know you all try to be like Jsu but this was Jsu in the playoffs on steroids.....

I was at that game. Me and my Jackson homeboys rolled out from Baton Rouge right after our home game. They had moved that game to Sunday in Memorial. One of the most hyped black college games of all time. Casem coached a masterful game that day. Defense and a balance offense beat Valley that day. Alcorn's secondary was hella. With Ike Holt, Moon, Stewart and my fellow Callaway Charger and former Saints DB Milton Mack. All them cats could run and hit. I know Holt and Mack had decent NFL careers.

Cooley had been beating everybody that year. Both teams were undefeated I believe going into that game.

If I am not mistaken. Didn't both Valley and Alcorn go to the playoffs that year?
 
At least Valley made it to the playoffs.

I have never seen fans like these fools from SU always trying to talk about schools and playoffs and those mofos ain't never been once. Thats how ghetto people are. Always talking down about people that are at least trying to leave the ghetto behind while they stand pat on BROKE and BUSTED. :lol:

Frat, why do you continue to let JRock ruffle your feathers about the playoffs or any post he makes? Also SU folks on this board do not speak for the masses of SU fans world wide, just like I tell yall that the JSU folks on this board don't speak for the masses of JSU alums worldwide or even in Jackson.

Who knows how many SU fans want the playoffs(Not enough to change anything). And you need to stop saying folks were scared to go because JRock or a few other Jags poke fun at our ineptness as a conference not winning a single game in the playoffs. Casem was our AD right after that Alcorn run. He wasn't sced to go the playoffs at Alcorn, so he wasn't scared at SU.

All yall need to do is just LOL @ Jrock when throws a dart at your schools. And for the record even if SU had gone to the playoffs it wouldn't helped with our issues now. Those are separate. Our situation has nothing to do with not ever playing in that playoffs. Hell we could have won that mofo and we would still be hurting. Just like it aint helping the MEAC schools who are just as broke as the SWAC schools. One thing for sure, it doesn't look good for us losing all those games no matter who went or didn't go. After a while you would think one of those teams would have won. But no....because nobody would play them tough schools in the regular season and just think you can show up in the playoffs and win. Until our schools schedule them in the regular season and win. We will lose every playoff game from hear to eternity. That's why the MEAC hasn't made as much noise either. I don't really care about folks making it to the playoffs. It is the wins that count. Right now our conference has a big fat zero. I would be even more pissed at SU if we went and lost because of inept scheduling and preparation.
 
When you really think about it....This may have been the last brand of SWAC Football many SWAC Alumni Enjoyed back in the day that they still talk about in 2012. Good Balanced Offenses, Solid Defenses, Superb Coaching.

Cause Lord knows when the early 90s and 00s hit with McNair, Pete (Remember Alcorn vs. SU 1995?), Big Daddy, Robert Kent, Bruce Eugene etc. Defense went out the window...:lol:.

If memory serves me correctly Totten was injured and didn't play in that playoff game and Rice played quarterback. Still no excuse for them to get beat by 60 points.

One thing I love about the SWAC is the mythology of the conference and the personalities. Even to this day. Doug has a mythology about him, coach Cador does too. It's important we generate our own stories celebrating the conference's mythology.

:tup: someone needs to put all of our old games on YouTube. We for SU I wish they would put the footage on our premium content section of Gojagsports. I would love to see some old Avery footage, Bobby Phills footage, SU upset over Georgia tech, or SU games vs McNair.

ESPN owns the 1995 SU-Alcorn game footage, correct?

All of our schools should look into restoring the tapes for a modern audience.

I hate to be the one to burst your bubble but in 1984 Valley had an atrocious defense. S.U. had about 40 points on them at the half and still managed to lose the game and LA Tech and Alcorn bust the clock on that defense. In 1984 I would have only given props to Alcorn's defense. And even they managed to lose in the 2nd round to LA Tech by 21 points. No one scored over 16 points on Alcorn that year but Valley and LA. Tech. I would say there were some teams in the 90's that had better defenses than most of the 1984 teams. S.U. 1993 defense comes to mind.
 
Amazing find

I still remember the day this game happened, we had to stay at my cousins house on North Side Dr., while our parents went to the game. I was lil man back then. Everyone talked about this game so much. Finally get a chance to see it.

That was AWESOME to view via youtube....But I will be GLAD when we can stop looking to the PAST for good football and Produce that kind of football now....Stadiums Full Great teams great coaching and both bands rocking....I want to see that now....:smh;
 
I watched this whole game. I am glad I did. It was always suggested to me that Rice was this great receiver on a receiving corp of scrubs but man 81, 41, and 21 were some ballers for Valley.

I didn't know Cooley used to coach HS ball in Heidelberg.

I also didn't know that Dr. Johnny was his DC and I assume Dennis Thomas was the DC or position coach for the Godfather.

They didn't show much of the bands but after the announcers interviewed the Golden Girls, I want to see footage of that.

It said a lot that this was biggest game EVER in the state of Mississippi but with "The Gunslinger vs The Godfather" sounds like a championship fight or a really good old movie. That's enough to draw a good crowd.

..and that formation by Cooley to have four WRs lined up (literally) on one side was ummmm interesting.
