Yeah that's the record. Partly because when Ole Miss, State and USM played games against Bama and LSU there, Memorial hadn't been expanded. And since then, they took out those endzone bleachers, so capacity ain't as big now. That was about 5000 seats. Those games where JSU-SU hit 58,000 or close, mighta broken the record if the endzone seats were there. Lotta folk don't realize that capacity at Memorial now is a little over 58K. Bleachers need to be added to get to 60K or over.
 
I tell y'all one thing, you gotta give major props to the Alcorn DBs in this game. Checking Valley's WRs man to man was damn near suicide. JSU tried that earlier that season and Rice ate Carl Johnson's lunch. Glad I got to witness this one first hand.

Didn't watch videos 2 & 3, but it was great watching video 1. This is back when football was played hard, by hard athletes.

And it wouldn't hurt to keep them around for our present day athletes....
 
I remember, my old boss telling me about this game. A sea of black people enjoying themselves.


Also, Tennessee State was ranked #1 in D-1AA in 1984. But, they ruled ineligible at the end of the season.
