JSU enuff said!
Watching these the 2 HBCU's that have participated in the NCAA tournament has got me wondering have we really fell behind the MEAC as the best conference among HBCU....

The MEAC has a good reputation in basketball as well as football they have been competitive in both sports...I just dont understand why my conference cant reach that level of success NATIONALLY...

The MEAC has a good reputation in football?

Yes they do....SC State hangs with the big boys year in and year out except for this past season....dont forget about Bethune Cookman and FAMU have both had good football teams in recent years...

I wouldn't go that far but recently, they seem to garner more respect than the SWAC in the FCS.

The SWAC's reign in football....at the end of the day..again what are we (SWAC) playing for? At least the MEAC schools have that chance to be champions in the FCs. Though that's not much it is a statement....

Still Founder, if you would have made a statement about the MEAC being better than the SWAC two decades ago, you would have gotten laughed at.... Hard.

Now, look at the SWAC-MEAC Challenge record.

I just don't believe we (SWAC) have a large enough incentive to play for....I don't know...

I know a lot of people on here love to squat on SWAC basketball any chance they can but in my mind there is not a gap in talent at all. The differences are coaching and perception.

I think the coaching difference was on display in this tourney (although I will say this. Norfolk State got the best draw they could get for a #2 seed in Missouri, an undersized guard oriented team that focuses on shooting). Valley's downfall was their unability to hit free throws (something I have preached the whole season that would haunt them) and the ability to break the press. Missouri gave NSU some body blows with pressure and they shook it off. And they hit their free throws. I think Valley barely shot over 50% for the game against WKU. Guess what happens if we shot a respectable 70-75%...

Perception. Teams like Norfolk State and Tennessee State schedule smart. They have some money game but they also schedule quality mid-majors so when they have 23-24 wins at the end of the season, that looks better than a 18-12 conference winner like Valley was even if we had one of the best conference records in the country (even if it is against the "sorry" SWAC as a lot of yall like to down yourselves). When the SWAC starts to schedule like that, watch how many of us end up with those 22-23 win seasons on the regular.

Do I honestly think NSU or TSU is that much better than Valley, Texas Southern, UAPB or Southern? Heck no... i would go as far as to say that the way the SWAC teams I listed played atin the SWAC tourney, we could have competed with or beat Murray State because of the make up of their team (guard oriented).

Now, look at the SWAC-MEAC Challenge record.

That is a not a good measuring stick. When you look at the records of the 2 participating teams at the end of the season, it is lop-sided:

SCSU 27 [9-2]-Alabama State 14 [6-5]
Hampton 27 [10-2]-Grambling 26 [3-8]
Southern 33 [8-3]-FAMU 27 [3-8]
Hampton 17 [6-5]- Jackson State 13 [7-5]
SCSU 34 [10-2]-Grambling 31 [6-3]
Southern 37 [2-9]-Delaware State 27 [3-8]
Bethune-Cookman 63 [8-3] Prairie View 14 [5-6]

Man, it ain't like the MEAC has won a postseason game in...EVER. So your theory might be a little flawed.

They are 0-13 in the last 12 years. They have not won a game in the playoffs since 1999. A&T beat Tennessee State and FAMU beat App. State and Troy.

Plain and simple. That is the problem with our football programs, too. We always get out-coached.

What so WRONG about playing for a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP? This is what kids want to play for...who grew up saying I want to play for a SWAC title....

I am all for us participating in the playoffs. That SCG is retarded, especially since we play all 9 teams during the regular season.

there you go again, couple days ago you was saying that the swac is what and what with the meac in basketball... The MEAC is much better then us in football and basketball. No they havent won a playoff game. But the fact that some teams are recuiting to change the 0- whatever record means that the rest of the conference has to recruit and coach the same to have chance. Thats called progress, we havent had progress since the creation of the SCG.. We are actually going backwards... They are better point blank

did i read that norfolk got a better draw the valley.... Lol mizzou under size guards are much better then everyone on wku put together...lol valley didnt make shots, they should have beat wku by 30 but they wasnt selective on their shots. In they played out of control, which became a norm for them at the end of the season.
The meac is better, they schedule better and thier admin and coaches are much better.

I do think their top 3 basketball teams (Savannah State, Norfolk State, Hampton) are better than our top 3 teams (Valley, Southern, Texas Southern). Their top football teams are not better than our's, though. I saw NSU play A&T, Howard, and Hampton last year and they would get spanked by Jackson State, Grambling and Alabama State. BCU's blowout win over Prairie View was not an indicator that the MEAC is better, since JSU basically did the same thing to PV later in the season.

The numbers say the MEAC has been a better basketball conference than the SWAC. I know not by much, but better nonetheless.

The MEAC won 37 non-conference games this year. The SWAC won 7. The MEAC over the last 10 years has featured more 20-win teams and multiple teams finishing the season with a winning record.
The MEAC has four schools finish the regular season with a winning record this season. The SWAC had 2.

But I will say this, however. NSU had an uncharacteristically hot shooting day against Mizzou. They normally shoot 31 percent from three. Today they shot 52 percent. NSU shot 54 percent for the game. They normally shoot 43 percent. They were able to match Mizzou shot for shot.

You can attribute that to the MEAC scheduling more mid-majors. We need to start doing the same thing.

These are facts there use to be a time where u couldnt say this...

You have to judge progress by what transpires against non-conference opponents in the regular season and in the postseason. The MEAC, while has played well against the SWAC in recent years, have been a little below average against non-MEAC/SWAC opponents. As far as I'm concerned there can't be that much distance between the conferences if neither league does well against non-conference FCS opponents on a regular basis.

Jackson state maybe but the nsu i saw would have beaten us.. I would go any further on that one, cause i dont want to hear the hate doug stuff

1. Norfolk missed a ton of key free throws at the end of the game that allowed Missouri to stay in the game

2. Missouri didn't really press that much due to their lack of depth. Norfolk is going to see a real press with a much deeper Florida team.

3. Norfolk had a hot shooting night and Missouri didn't play championship caliber defense.
