Doug Williams is afraid of competition

Unless those close to Doug can convince him of the benefit of playing in-state schools, we can forget him listening to the new AD. Hell, he once defied then President Favors and went public criticizing him for scheduling a game versus Nichols State. Doug played the game (we whupped in Thibodeaux) and let Nichols out of the return game the next year so that we could go to Atlanta and play Morris Brown before less than 4K fans.

Yall let me know how the "AD having final say on the Schedule" thingy works out!

Beezy, Doug will justified in this one. My Dad tells me the story last time we played Nicholls with Coach Rob, the Nicholls coach made references that "SWAC coaches can not coach" because the Colonels always kicked SU's @$$. Needless to say the Legend took the G-MEN down Bayou Lafourche and kicked their @$$ and vowed never to play them again.

Also, you know a return game against Nicholls at Gram would have mimicked the crowd against Mo B in ATL.

The official attendance for Gram vs MBC is 8,653. S.U. in 19 years is behind Nicholls by 7 games with 5 of those losses coming by 8 points or less. Against their sister conference school NWST The series is deadlock at 5-5. It really doesn't matter what 2nd hand information and the opinion of a hick is...

The point is the Icon always has to clean up mess of the traditionless.

The numbers (facts) contradict your conjecture. In 7 years Doug has played 7 games against PWC. If you take your emotions out of it for a minute you will realize this is really not a Doug problem. Grambling has always played PWC and as someone stated earlier, really scheduling is an AD function. Also, Grambling should be commended for helping Morris Brown and Savannah State for scheduling games with them when they were I-AA independence and trying to find a conference and games. If Doug had any influence over these 2 games he should be commended.

Doug vs PWC
McNeese-twice
Portland State
Nicholls State
Louisville
San Jose
Louisiana Monroe

I have no problem with the scheduling of those schools... I don't agree with the Concordia's and Virginia Lynchburg's. I'm sure in those instances there's some element of Doug wanting to help a fellow HBCU... I get that. However, it's taking away (imo) from the POTENTIAL that exists with Doug as the Head Coach at Grambling. His name is still big in the Sports world...and he can add to that as a successful coach who not only won in the realm of BCF but in all of FCS. It's not abandoning the HBCU sports world to venture out and play regional and local schools. Not only the satisfaction of successfully representing Grambling and the Conference comes the benefit of lower travel cost and potentially larger gates. Northwestern didn't draw much but they went on to be an 0-11 team and it was during a rain. McNeese drew 17k plus so that's the kind of gate we need to have at our games. I just think it makes sense to play them...Some are saying those schools won't play us. C'mon, yall know that ain't true...let's be real.

Yeah, I know Nichols owned the jags...that's part of the reason why I wished we could have brought them to Grambling and put some more hurt on them. But I still think that game would draw...plus as you know, Grambling has a strong backing among the River Parish folk down Terrebonne, Assumption, and that area. They would enjoy making the trip up Highway 1 to I49 getting off on 167 and making it on into the piney woods to see Grambling remain undefeated versus those Colonel Jag Killers.

Don't forget I-20 or Hwy 80. People would get lost by following your directions lol

Again, I don't believe this is a Doug issue but rather an AD issue. I don't agree with playing schools such as VUL and Concordia. However the premise of this thread ("Doug is afraid of competition") is flawed at best an out right fabrication at worse.

Southern U has played southland teams 30 times compared to 8 Grambling meetings. Give JROCK an update when you play them 22 more times. In the interim, I still don't believe that Doug is "afraid" of the Cowboy Tiger killers are no other PWC. It is just another instance of another organization expecting one person to be a Moses and satisfy everyone (not going to happen).

I'm not even looking at this from whether he's scared or not... doesn't matter in my reasoning. I'm saying that we stand to benefit from playing these schools and that rather than play VUL's and Concordia for whatever the coach's reason. I stated earlier that I think he's afraid to lose to them. SOG commented/asked if that's the same...I didn't answer, I will answer now. I'm no mentalist and I can't look inside another man's head. Here goes...Doug is not afraid of those teams per se'. He probably feels that they are no more talented or better coached/prepared than his teams, so he doesn't fear them. Yet deep down, he knows it's a possibility that we can lose and that's something he just can't stomach.

AMEN

We can sit around in talk about why they wouldnt play us and why we should try to play them behind the Nursing building OCt 20 during the VUL game. im sure it want be much going on inside the staduim.

It's not an AD when you don't have one...yet.

why we get so pissed when things don't go our way, i will never understand. coaches and fans do not think alike and as fans if we are so good at coaching and being the ad why so many are not doing it? it's not easy, but fans think they have all the answers.

Uhhh...that is why we are called "fans".

Take away Doug or whomever the coach is... Now answer me this: Who would you prefer to see Grambling play for homecoming "in-state FCS school" or Virginial Lynchburg?

What coach in his right mind will schedule a FCS in state school for homecoming?? That is dumb. I can see for any other game except homecoming but no coach would take such a big risk like that unless you are LSU. LSU ain't calling no good team for hc either.Too much to lose.

Bring Y'all Fairweather asses to the damn HOME GAMES!!!

Not those river parish folk...that's how most of them travel, unless they wanted to see Sicily Island.

The quicker way would be north on U.S. Hwy 90 (soon to be a part of I-49) to I-49; north on I-49 to U.S. Hwy 167; north on U.S. Hwy 167 to U.S. Hwy 80; west on U.S. Hwy 80 to RWE Jones; turn right on RWE Jones. Them Cajun Colonels would love to make that trip.

Frat in Lynchburg, VA told me Grambling better not lose to VUL.

Why not play a quality opponent for homecoming? I guess I'm not afraid of those schools... I recall growing up during a era of Grambling football where we played Tn.State and Jackson State for homecoming. As for what LSU or other schools do or don't do, I can't even pretend to care. I'm talking about how I feel it's in Grambling's best interest to play a game that fans are interested in. In theory, the "just come to the game" sounds good...but in the real world it ain't getting it done.

As for attending games, did you personally attend all home games once you moved from Ruston? Things come up, huh? When the opponent is the caliber of Concordia and VUL the "things" that come up tend to make the choice not to attend that much easier.

Unfortunately, we can't get our mindset away from this being about a particular coach. It's not... it's about Grambling needing a boost in attendance. One of the best ways to do that is to increase season ticket sales. I'm just of the opinion that season ticket sales to folks in Louisiana would be more appealing with a home game every year with SLC or MEAC opponenet would sale easier. Include the PCC in the season ticket sales and it makes it even more attractive to FANS. That's not being fairweather, that's being a demanding customer. The decline in our level of play and level of competition has cost our turnstiles to suffer... I think we improve not only level of play when we increase our level of competition, but also our level of attendance.

I understand the passion and the need of some to feel they are defending Doug...but this is bigger than that. This is about letting a feeling of loyalty (where it really is not necessary) to make them not take an objective approach on the subject.

U said an in state FCS opponent for homecoming. Homecoming??? Its just not smart scheduling for homecoming.

I have drove back to Grambling for games when I didn't I have to WORK. Its more people like yourself who don't work weekends and still have an excuse. Things come up...Yeah right. Work ain't something that just comes up.

Like I said earlier.

Bring Y'all Fairweather Asses to the HOME GAMES. Reschedule the fish fry plate sales...deacon meetings that just have to be on Saturdays...etc

Dude, the only year I missed a game was last year... the reason (which is no one's business) went much deeper than Deacon Duties, but that too has priority for me over home games at this stage in my life. Plan to make the games this year, even the farce against VUL. But that mindset of "just come to the game regardless" is a cop out and isn't doing Grambling any good. Yeah, the old guard fans will come, but even the students on campus ain't interested in these games of this nature. Can't believe you're afraid to play one of the Southland schools for homecoming! At the rate we're going and devaluing our program, it won't be long before these schools start calling us to be their homecoming foe. Sad...Gramblinites not confident in lining up to play other FCS schools, in-state or otherwise. I'm done... can't believe folks who love Grambling see this type of scheduling is good for our program. SMH... I'll leave it alone. Nothing else to say here!

"Make the choice easier" ??????

That's exactly why I say FAIRWEATHER ASSES. THAT'S A PISS POOR ATTITUDE TO HAVE TOWARD DEAR OL GRAMBLING.

What's next??? U gon start saying how you only going to the "IMPORTANT" games.

Lord help Our Fairweather Assesd Fanbase!!!!

Caucasoids gon see their team play whoever. Some of us got 12,564 excuses and none of them are Work...Death...Illness.

Y'all carry on. Quality opponent for homecoming??? LMAO. Paul don't want his blood pressure rocketing for homecoming...Drink...

You should know by now that I don't address guttersnipes. It is beneath me.

Nothing has changed. Doug is afraid of competition.

You're afraid of Doug. And jealous of him. Nothing and no one is beneath you. You dropped the bar.
And Doug is still a better coach than Broadway, 365 days a year and 366 on a leap year.
