Southern, Jackson State to meet for two-game set

Heading into its traditional two-game series against Jackson State — with each team getting its break from divisional play — the Southern baseball team hasn’t gotten much in the way of good news lately.

Sure, the Jaguars started this season on a nice little tear, and yes, they lead still lead Grambling in the Western Division of the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

But they’ve lost six of their past nine games, and they’ve been a little sloppy lately — sloppy on defense (with six errors in a Wednesday loss to Louisiana-Lafayette), sloppy at the plate (stranding 83 runners in nine games) and sometimes sloppy on the mound (Southern starters have a 7.39 ERA in the past six games).

But Southern did get a slice of good news this week when it learned that star first baseman Frazier Hall was named one of 10 national finalists for the Senior CLASS Award.

Hall and the Jaguars (21-15) face JSU (20-18) at 6 p.m. Friday in Jackson, then again at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Said Hall in a text message: “I really want to bring this award home to Baton Rouge!â€

What is this award, exactly?

The “CLASS†part stands for “celebrating loyalty and achievement for staying in school,†according to its website. Candidates must be seniors. They’re selected based on four major parameters:

The Alcorn Braves will take their 4 game winning streak into a Sat/Sun Home series against Alabama A&M. First pitch Sat is Noon-DH. The games can be heard on WPRL.ORG

They showed highlights in BR, looks like it was a emotional game. SU has been playing horrible, hope this wakes them up. They were just going thru the motions Wednesday.

Drains and Russell piched for JSU and I believe Foster Garcia ans Hall for Southern

Brian Foster got the start Friday for Southern.

Advocate staff report
Published: Apr 22, 2011 Comments (0) JACKSON, Miss. — The Southern baseball team wasn’t flawless Friday night against Jackson State — but the Jaguars did just enough, getting a strong effort from its pitching staff in a 4-3 victory at Braddy Field.

Junior right-hander Brian “Doc” Foster, making his first start of the season, held off the Tigers for long enough.

Better yet, sophomore Daniel Garcia and senior Cody Hall recorded the final out in the ninth inning.

JSU had a runner on third base with nobody out, but the Tigers botched a suicide squeeze, popping up their bunt attempt in the infield.

Garcia dove to catch it, then threw to third base to complete the double play.

Cody Hall closed it out.

Cody Hall is normally the team’s Sunday starter, but he’s available out of the bullpen this weekend because SU (22-15) and Jackson (20-19) are playing only two games.

The teams meet again at 1 p.m. Saturday in Baton Rouge. This interdivisional series does not count in the Southwestern Athletic Conference standings.

Southern coach Roger Cador said he was pleased to see Foster excel. An off-and-on reliever during his first two seasons at Southern, he has typically performed better as a starter.

“He pitched the way I thought he would pitch,” Cador said. “That bullpen is a monster, and ... I probably made a mistake, making him a bullpen guy. But you only have so many openings as a starter. I think with the way he pitched, he gave himself another opportunity.”

After looking @ the box scores I see SU still not playing good. Left 12 men on base smh.

Cador is highly upset about this! They better get it together swinging them bats. They wait until the 6th inning to start scoring some runs and some times they be having to catch up, it put a lot of pressure on them but one thing I like this team or any other team, they never give up.

I agree they never give up but alot of these games we lost the last couple of weeks we shouldnt have. We havent played the same since all those scouts(12) showed up at SUnday game against Gram. Looks like half of the team is playing selfish instead of playing smart team ball. Cador is right about Wilmy. He's trying to hit every pitch 2 miles  regardless of the situation. You know its bad when even the #9 hole is swinging for the fences lol.
