So FAMU fans don't want to see FAMU play those FCS schools?

Very much so. When I was in school, we played a series with GA Southern and our fans loved it. They chose not to renew. I think it was when Ken Riley beat him with NFL talent. Wally Williams, Jamie Nails, Earl Holmes, the WR who played with MN and GB. Ken had some good talent and some scholars on his teams. Good man. When the program gets back to where we expect, we will meet plenty of good teams in the playoffs. With the few OOC games we have we have to balance making money (Miami, UF, S. FL all paying over $500,000), OOC rivals (TnSU, SU etc) and regional FCS powers. It is what it is. Many FAMU fans have been hoping for a 7 game conference season so we can do all the above, but we may only get 8 conference games.

When is the last time FAMU played a non-HBCU FCS school in Bragg?

Jayrob:

We are getting over $1 million for two OOC games straight up. Why would we give that up to play teams in the regular season we can play in the postseason. Say we give up one of our games and lose possibly $400,000 and the LB is promising less than $25,000 per participant. Or we can keep the $500,000 and play in the FCS and either break even or make a small amount of money (less than $50,000 at most maybe if we host multiple games). You tell me which optimizes both our competitive and financial opportunities.

Dude, what are you talking about? When the MEAC did have the seven game mandate, you still didn't schedule any of those teams I mentioned. Which is it, make money or improve your competition?
Out of one side of your mouth you say you want competition, then you claim you'd lose money if you played those schools.

Only one or two of the MEAC schools will have the opportunity to play those schools in the first place if you made the playoffs. What about the other eight schools who don't make it to the playoffs? How are they improving? That's it, they're not because they're scheduling cream puff D-2 SIAC and CIAA schools.
This tells me all I need to know, which is most of the MEAC schools talk a good game about the playoffs, but when it comes to scheduling those FCS schools in the regular season that are ranked, you guys run from them.

South Carolina State used to play Wofford, now they don't play them anymore. As a matter of fact, SCS's record against them was like 0-8.

Where are you getting your information for your hateful rant? Below is a listing of schools MEAC teams will play in 2011. It is minus the teams for Delaware St and Howard, whose schedules have yet to be posted:

D-2 (4): Albany St, Central St, Ft. Valley St, and Virginial St.

SWAC (3): Alabama A&M, Praire View A&M, and Southern Univ.

FCS (10): Appalachin St, Central Michigan, Charleston Southern, Elon, Georgia St, Old Dominion, Princeton, Robert Morris, SE Louisiana, and Towson Univ.

FBS (6): Bowling Green, Indiana, Miami, Rutgers, South Florida, and West Virginia.

Central Michigan (MAC Conference) is FBS.

How many of those FCS teams are playing FAMU, SCSU or BCU?

I clearly explained the economic benefit of playing certain schools in the regular season versus the post season, but as they made too much economic sense, he went on another tangent. At the end of the day, every school has to do what is best for them.

We miss out on some good football and some potential money makers... Grambling needs to play AT LEAST one other Louisiana based school each season.

People dog us for playing Miami, but we have over 1,500 students on campus from Broward and Dade counties and have tens of thousands of alums down there and make over $500,000 to play there. Some stuff just makes sense for particular programs based on circumstance.

We see the fruits, or lack thereof, of doing what's best for the school.

Sure you do. See the post above about playing Miami and how many students we have from there. Or playing in Atlanta and how many students we get from there. And how Ammons is growing FAMU at a time many HBCUs are hurting for students. I can go back decades and show where ONE losing season at FAMU gets you shown the door in football. Not very many programs in the MEAC or SWAC can say the same thing. Taylor came to a program that won three games and has went 8-3 every year. And graduated players and not had negative press. And he did NOT get a contract extension because we EXPECT to be in the playoffs.

I understand yall playing them... If I was in FAMU's position, most of my non-conference games would be against the Florida schools.

Just like I understand the BC. There is no way SU and Grambling can replace that kind of marketing on national tv. I just hope the schools are capitalizing on that property to get students from around the country.

One of my good friends here in Jackson is a FAMU grad and he tells me the real reason why FAMU's enrollment is growing. He even told me that students are told they have academic scholarships but FAMU can't pay them. Either way, everything isn't rosey in Tallahassee.

BTW, I personally know that Taylor is on thin ice at FAMU. Yall won't be going to the playoffs.

If Taylor is on thin ice at FAMU, he will probably be attractive for some of the "apparently soon to be open" jobs in the SWAC.

President Ammons Awarded More Than $1.5 Million in Scholarships to Help Make Life a Little Better
by Florida A&M University on Wednesday, March 16, 2011 at 2:48pm

Life got a little better for some of the State of Florida’s best and brightest students as Florida A&M University (FAMU) President James H. Ammons awarded more than $1.5 million in scholarships during its fourth annual President’s Tour: FAMU Up Close and Personal. During his seven-city tour, Ammons visited The Villages, Leesburg, Winter Haven, St. Petersburg, Naples, Ft. Myers and Miami.

Accompanying Ammons on the tour were university recruiters, administrators, student leaders and members of the FAMU Connection, a group of talented students who tell the university’s story through song and dance.

At the Seabreeze Recreation Center in The Villages, Fla., Ammons awarded $168,000 in scholarships to students including two Distinguished Scholarship Awards.

“At FAMU, we are going to put you on a path to the good life,” said Ammons. “We are here today to recognize and acknowledge you [students].”

In Leesburg, Ammons awarded the first Life-Gets-Better (LGB) Scholarship to Lachonda Lacey, a sophomore at South Sumter High School in Bushnell, Fla.

The LGB scholarship pays for tuition and fees, room and board, books, provides a $500 stipend per semester, a PC notebook, an iPad and a guaranteed summer internship.

Ammons stated that he wanted to be the first to offer Lacey a scholarship. When asked how does she feel to be offered a scholarship while being a sophomore, Lacey said, “It is so amazing that it is indescribable,” while smiling from ear to ear.

What makes the sophomore so unique is that she is in the process of trying to get a patent on a new treatment of a staph infection called MRSA (Methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus), which is an infection that is caused by a strain of staph bacteria that’s become resistant to the antibiotics commonly used to treat ordinary staph infections.

“My project, the tea tree test, was designed to find a more natural and applicable way to treat staph infections,” said Lacey.

After 48 hours of testing, Lacy stated she measured the area that the remedy killed off the bacteria. After obtaining the results, she shared her results with a scientist she was working with and the scientist was so surprised by the results that she sent the remedy to a corporate lab to test on MRSA, which came back to verify the results.

In his hometown of Winter Haven, Ammons awarded another LGB Scholarship to Stephon Mikell, a senior at International Baccalaureate Bartow High School. Mikell, who scored a 34 on the ACT and maintains a 4.3 grade point average, was in shock when his name was called as a LGB scholarship recipient.

“When I heard my name, I started to shake,” said Mikell, who plans to major in mathematics. “It is good to know that they [FAMU] cared enough to come. I didn’t consider FAMU but my mindset has changed. I am still shaking.”

Steeve Pierre-Lewis, a senior at Blanche Ely High in Miami, Fla. and a recipient of the LGB scholarship, expressed his thoughts about being awarded the scholarship.

“FAMU was not on my list before, but now it is,” said Pierre-Lewis, showcasing an award-winning smile. “This [LGB scholarship] is a great incentive. Also, another turning point was hearing the student’s perspective.”

At the beginning of the program, Breyon Love, vice president of FAMU’s Student Government Association (SGA) and SGA’s president elect; Kindall Johnson, the 2010-2011 Miss FAMU; Iman Sandifer, a history education student; and Omitope Taylor, a mechanical engineering student who received a LGB in the fall of 2008, shared their FAMU story with the audience.

Following the students’ perspectives, President Ammons shared with the parents, students and alumni, some of FAMU’s accomplishments and why FAMU was traveling the State of Florida.

“Our corporate partners provide the money for these scholarships awarded because they want FAMU talent,” said Ammons. “Our best scholarship, the Life-Gets-Better Scholarship, is so good that life for the entire family gets better.”

The following are the scholarship amounts for each city.

The Villages $156,000

Leesburg $ 72,000

Winter Haven $ 254,000

St. Petersburg $ 184,000

Dunbar High School $ 80,000

Gulf Coast High School $ 13,000

Naples $ 44,000

Coral Reef High School $ 144,000

Miami $ 570,000

If there are kids with award letters from FAMU giving them scholarships and the school wont pay, please show me the news articles or lawsuits.

The reason there may be questions regarding Taylor is lack of playoffs and being beaten by SCSU 3 times in a row (8 times for FAMU overall). Ammons publicly told him before last season he wanted the streak to end. And we have seen some shaking up of the coaching staff this off season.

Taylor sold yall a bag of magic beans. He would have been better off staying at Hampton. Its only going to get worse this year.

LOL...If Taylor sold us magic beans, Comegy sold ya'll the whole stalk and the bridge to get to the bean field. And the crazy part is, we told JSU how that was going to go BEFORE you hired him. I directly communicated with a few JSU posters on this board how he would get into APR issues.

Comegy inherited that. His only problem was Woody. Like I said, yall won't be going to the playoffs. Mark my word. :)

He released a crap load of kids and signed a bunch of transfers his first year. That was posted on ALL the boards. You can't do that in the age of APR. The Billy Joe model does not work under APR and he is from the Joe coaching tree. That is SPECIFICALLY what we told many JSU folk.

The APR is a rolling 4-year system. It has improved but Comegy inherited drama. Our APR has improved and will continue to improve.

Yall still aint going to the playoffs.
