Sweetie, it ain't about the ring (well not entirely :lol:) or the cost of the ring. It's about being with someone I love and who I feel enriches my life. And a person who does that is someone I share similar goals and ambition with. He wants more out of life and is hungry for success (financially/personal wellbeing) and is living (or actively seeking to live) a peaceful and joyful life. A man like THAT may not necessarily be rich with money (and he doesn't have to be), but he takes care of his business and is responsible! And THAT'S what I would want. So, it's ain't all about the money, but the character of an ideal man. The ring is simply a representation.
 
You pretty much have to do what you can without being "cheap" so to speak. Luckily for me, we had already been discussing rings and such before I bought the engagement ring, so I already knew what I was facing. One technique I used was leaving a Kay circular laying around. She circled the ones that she liked without being asked to :lol: . Another thing to keep in mind is that these days you will also end up either buying a wrap for the engagement ring to make the actual wedding ring or a separate wedding ring altogether. Therefore, you have to plan ahead for that as well.

Jewelers tend to spout the "two months salary" rule, but I think that was created when salaries were much lower. I'm not balling by any means, but two months pre-tax salary for me is way more than either me or my wife were looking at for a ring.

Husbands = providers. At least, that's the theory. Yes, they see the ring but they are looking much farther than that.

Whoever said two months salary is tripping. I wish I would spend that dayum on a ring. (I really hope you are talking net income btw).. The rule of thumb used to one month's salary I thought anyway.

Personally, my limit as of January 2011 is $2500, I hope to stay close to $2000. I watched a homie pay $5000 for a ring and $16k for a wedding and he didn't know how he was going to eat for a few weeks.

It's possible to pay only $5000 for a ring and $16000 for a wedding and not be struggling. Actually, it's possible to do that for cash. That's where good planning a preparation comes in.

Like I said, if it's a struggle then don't do it.

I'm not the type to take my Pastor's words as law. However, one thing that my Pastor says that I definitely agree with is that you aren't truly engaged without a ring and a set date.

I can't speak for all couples, but from what I have seen the only time proposing without a ring really works is in undergrad.

That's dumb. Like I said in my first post: Spend what you can without going into debt.

And you can get a good ring for $2500. Hell, if you know where to go, you can get a good one with good carat and clarity/color for $1000- 1500.
