GSU "Neck" vs La Tech 2010

mustardmanSU_04,

I'm feeling you really strong and I do get it. In 99.9% of the cases across the country, the marching band is the largest, single, contiguous entity capable of evoking hype for the team. That is the primary reason for being there. As much as we can become enamored with making music in an open venue, thousands of people will not be paying money to stream into our stadium week after week just to watch us drill and hear us play. So, the marching band must do its job in providing that level of support to the stars of the day: the institution's football team. HOWEVER, we must do so without sacrificing what makes us unique from all of the other people there: the ability to produce the artistry of music and some visual creativity.

I will give you this example using "Neck". I have not heard EVERY school's version of it, but the best grade that I will any version that I have heard is a "B". Why? About half of the bands are so busy playing their riffs that the miss playing the big fat min7 chord (or whatever it is). The ones that do play that chord then chant the lyric without singing the chord. Things like that are what separate us from non-musicians.

So, I say hype the crowd until they are in a frenzy ... just do it with musical excellence.

I agree with you 100% NOW! But, don't get me wrong, I know is SU's band room, we be sangin' them chords..... But "The Nation" sings, of course, the MAIN note. For a large groop of testosterone-driven men (Mostly), SU be sangin'. Jukes, anyone remember when we used to sing the "7-fold Amen"? Why did we stop?!

We must learn to control those hormones. Failure to do so can produce undesired products.

Great example.

I agree 100%. The über-aggressive sound served it's purpose WELL for decades, at 128 people. I think now, Su is between 2 worlds, so to speak. I do appreciate and LOVE the sound though.

Whenever and wherever crowd appeal is satisfied at the expense of education and the artform, the marching band program is a facade and a sham. Davis, Foster, Hutchinson, Greggs, etc., all knew this. That is why the product was so excellent.

If this is what we have come to, then I understand why the overall product is as stale and unmusical as it is.

mustardmanSU_04, these statements are not directed at you. If you really believe your statement, you have been sold a pig-in-a-poke by an attitude that came along way before you did. The environment is bad and it needs to be changed.

I agree with you on this one Dacon... Im of the belief you make the crowd appreciate good music..
