Before Crit rudely interupted! (BOOK)

Jared...it has been a couple of years since I have gone on one of these tirades, so just don't respond to this. YIS2003YIS, you have joined TSPN since the last time I did this, so you are ignorant of my stance. This is not personal.

:flamethro
Every band out there has its history, style, and tradition. SU's is brassy and loud with a few WW thrown in just to say that you have them. Their arrangers write to that signature. No HBCU can out-SU the Jukebox. That's fine - if that is what you like. I mean if you put 18 speakers on 9 300-watt amps in my old '76 Honda Civic (I loved that car), turned up the volume and sent it rattling down the road with every thump of the bassline and thought it was the coolest thing going, then people like you love the sound of Jukes. For the record, no one who knows and loves the tradition of JSU wants to sound like a raggety-behind jukebox/Whirlitzer/Victrola. We recruit and deploy plenty of WW players that we actually want to hear in our marching band. We like arrangements that only occasionally send trumpets above Middle G so that the alto and tenor voicing actually enhances the balance of the chord structure. The real depth of the JSU marching band that we know and love is woven into the sonority, color, and timbre of the arranging and execution. You can't get that out of a ~BOX...it only comes with a BOOM!

So, keep your MP3-player-through-desktop-computer-speakers, ITunes download sound in Baton Rouge. We don't want it.

(See, Jared. I kept it short this time.)

1st of all hommie...im a band HEAD.. id rather hear songs with runs on songs Like (Get it on,Getaway. Ect.) so B4 u try to judge me...plz know what ur talking about.....My msg was directed at the Non-Band heads in the last thread..because they were saying the same ish they were saying 06-Present.....are u still with me???? ...Ok..See in that last thread they were talking about this and that and how they were going to be SO much more powerful .....and trying to compare a song like GET READY to ...Spirit???? Are u serious???...i just picked out a clip with 2 of the same songs ..to show the difference...SU has a powerful sound....but its balanced ....Yall have a clean sound...UNTIL yall play SU then yall throw it all out the door...and loose all tequnic & fundamentals....Just play like JSU...Stop trying to be the other man

Very, very well said. 'Cause you got folks (Jared) who seem to think (and act like) absolutely nothing is wrong with their band but loves to point out flaws nonstop of other bands (mainly the BOOM).

My thing is...I don't think Ive ever read/heard a Juke say that the "S" was perfect. So, what's wrong with observing and knowing that you got more facets of your game that's air-tight than anyone else? Esp, when it's right infront of us. What's wrong with knowing that there's a certain level that the group you've been in, has been there for decades...with lil to no years where you're considered to be lower than #1? Again...something that's very evident....yet, I guess, Juke and former Juke are expected to ignore it.

In Jordan's first 3-peat...Jordan wasn't perfect. But, who'll tell you that he wasn't the best during the games AND pushed to be the best, even in practice?

It ain't EVER been about being perfect. But, look around..."every week we're better than you" (whoever "you" is). Or, better yet..."you (whatever opposition) don't give the "S" a reason to think that your band was better". Ex...FAMn '00. Every Juke has said that was an "L". Why? Because every Juke knows FAMn earned it.

O'Bladerunner will never apologize for glaring facts that the "S" is still ahead of the game. NEVER. Ive been on these message boards for a sec....just like I was around before folks were able to talk non-stop isht "on a computer". And, Im STILL waiting on a Boomer...a Bumble Bee...an Ocean member...or, whoever, to point out where SU is coming up short...and, how it's preventing the "S" from kick'n arse every Saturday.

SU is a different animal....but, it seems only the folks that marched for the "S" can recognize it and adjust accordingly. Style and Intensity is on sum'mo isht. Most bands try to get it when they get to the bandroom. The "S" is still going at it after practice either on a horn or verbally ()

Ps- Hey Crit...:wavey:...look at my sig. Has the Boom EVER looked that clean on the field?

Never ending argument. And you wanna know why, because who's grading scale are we gonna go by? So long as its done by opinions, nobody wins.

I've witnessed alot of you guys emphasize music over volume. It thats the CASE......Pine Bluff and PV should have had the #1 spot for years. They can flat out play. :noidea:

There have been many years where many bands have "out-played" SU. Yall might have won in the volume area, and your drills are second to none.....but there are many more areas of critic that can be argued.

I take credit from no one but yall might wanna look beyond LA. before thinking you were the first to do, or the best to do.

Before Greggs, there was Foster, Lyle, and Conrad Hutch.....

Man cut this shcit out..

There is footage of every SU great battle alll over the net... Whom ever was SU's best competition EACH year posted..

Now go find some footage of YEARS SU got out played...

Some of yall need to cut this "SU ain't really all that" talk out..... Especially if your band tried to take a page out of SU's book....

LMAO @ Before there was Greggs... Negro.. Greggs came out and DID HIM!! How many bands are imitating Conrad? How many bands are imitating Foster compared to Greggs?...

And before all of them really making a MARK it was Mr.Hamp from St.Aug may he rest in peace..
:shame:

Thanks for sharing. I appreciate the contribution of your musical acumen. Don't get it twisted. It is possible that I have taught more than you know about bands for longer that you have been alive. I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I'm hard enough to tenderize an entire side of beef. If you want to understand power, then come to one of my lectures on physics. If you want to know about volume, I have a great series on digital signal processing that you might find useful. Whatever you do, don’t think that I am a slouch on this subject. You would be wrong.

We do agree that the BOOM needs to do what it does well and so does the BOX.

Dacon,
you are sorta going in circles.... What band have you ever seen SU try to be other than SU?

Come on dude.. you and I know you really wanted to say

We do agree that the BOOM needs to do what it does well ...PERIOD!

You ain't want to put SU in that... You just trying to please your misinformed JSU youngins now.. You are better than that man...

Never ending argument. And you wanna know why, because who's grading scale are we gonna go by? So long as its done by opinions, nobody wins.

There are many ways you can come to your own conclusions. Being there live....DVD's...and, probably the biggest and quickest "public" monster, the net. All kinds of folks have their own opinion. Some opinions don't show, but most opinions do with the net.

With that...it's TOO MANY clips where folks are on the same clip either giving props to the "S"...that's on the same page with pure hating, because one goes to another school...and, my favorite, those that get on the net and come up with the DUMBEST logic in why either the "S" ain't what is...or, the dumbest on why their favorite band didn't get an "L" vs SU (ex..."our tuba section was kill'n yall...so, we got the "S"). All those types in mass numbers in EACH clip.

So, should we just ignore the attention 100's of SU clips have gotten, just cuz folks feelings are hurt cuz their band ain't put'n out the product the "S" is?

I've witnessed alot of you guys emphasize music over volume. It thats the CASE......Pine Bluff and PV should have had the #1 spot for years. They can flat out play. :noidea:

True, music is more emphasized. Which it should be. And, yes...PB and PV can play. But, because they have a more tamed way of going about things, that's supposed to mean the "S" can't play, cuz their style is more intense and out-of-the-norm?

So, with that...why would someone from the "S" think that they're (PV and PB) automatically in the #1 spot?

There have been many years where many bands have "out-played" SU. Yall might have won in the volume area, and your drills are second to none.....but there are many more areas of critic that can be argued.

Please name the years. And, by all means...compare the other facets of marching band. He!l, that's what folks like me and J try to get folks to do. Instead of the folks that are more worried about "why the Juke didn't do this and that".

I, much like other Juke, always gives folks the opportunity to name the games where the "S" is getting out-played. But, more times than not...it doesn't happen. Why? Because, folks like to focus attention on the power...while totally ignoring the marches from the "S", the Beethoven 5ths, the "Getaways", the "Come Go With Me's", the "Imperial Marches" that the "S" has put'n out for YEARS.

Instead...we get things like more attention being payed to the ONE mistake the "S" made during a BOTB's that supposedly gave the "S" an L for the whole weekend...:retard:

I take credit from no one but yall might wanna look beyond LA. before thinking you were the first to do, or the best to do.

Before Greggs, there was Foster, Lyle, and Conrad Hutch.....
Best to do? Other than the "S"? Where?

Point it out AND have proof. That's all most Juke ask of those that think they're better than the "S".

I have only ever seen the Jukes be the Jukes. I like that about the Jukes. I would never want to be a Juke because of how Dr. Greggs chose to do it, but they do stick to their guns. So, they have my admiration. That is a direct tribute to the longevity of Dr. Greggs.

So, I said what I wanted to say, cause the Jukes already do what they do. The Boom abandoned its identity under Taylor and Liddell and I want it back. I just don't have enough clout to force my will in the situation.

I thought Taylor did a good job with JSU. But he did enjoy taking some things from other bands. But remember he was very young when he took over JSU and had only been at Kentucky State before then. I think he took alot of flack in 84 like all new band directors do when he came in and changed the way the Boom did some stuff. Especially that whole separating the drum section from the band and having them on the sidelines. They had a little Corps Style in them in 84.....then he gradually started doing some things folks that I don't think Haughton would have done. But none the less, the Boom was still a crowd pleasing band and they were clean.

I am sure the older Boom heads before the Taylor era were not as happy with some of those changes, but hey they got the job done and the Boom sounded good....it just started this whole JSU stole that from SU or somebody routine. I was just looking at the 86 film of SU vs JSU which was my Jr year and our Assoc. Band Dir at the time was announcing during the half time show. I guess I had forgotten how he was clowning about JSU copying SU on the microphone. I guess I never really thought about how you old Boom folks felt about Taylor and what changes he made, but now I can understand.

The interesting part is that the Taylor era produced some nice JSU bands compared to what came afterwards......I respect Doc Lidell as a music professor. He knows his stuff on that front. I just never thought he was the right fit for JSU as the head man. There were several other JSU alums I thought they would have brought in. But hey we all have the politics on our campuses. Anyway, I hope Murray or whomever they decide to bring in long term does a good job. I like seeing the bands do well. It is a good thing. It would be nice to have all the SWAC bands performing at high levels and sounding good.

Taylor did a GREAT job with The Boom. They were crisp and clean, a by-product of their dictator. I had no problem with him adding new stuff. The only problem was that he abandoned the signature. Part of it was that he was younger and probably wanted to make his mark. However, you don't throw out the legacy to make your own mark; what you have to do is embrace it and then exceed it. Taylor didn't do that.

Liddell's strength really seemed to be in the concert hall and not the stadium. He seemed to just try to support the status quo outside. I don't think he was the right man for that job but he was one of the few who had the right credentials at the time.
