Spike Lee Rips Tyler Perry

Spike Lee had an interview with Ed Gordon on Our World with Black Enterprise scheduled to air this weekend. In the interview he complained about “coonery and buffoonery†and both of Tyler Perry’s shows “Meet the Browns†and “House of Payne,†comparing them to characters from minstrel shows.

“We’ve had this discussion back and forth. When John Singleton [made 'Boyz in the Hood'], people came out to see it. But when he did ‘Rosewood,’ nobody showed up. So a lot of this is on us! You vote with your pocketbook, your wallet. You vote with your time sitting in front of the idiot box, and [Tyler Perry] has a huge audience. We shouldn’t think that Tyler Perry is going to make the same film that I am going to make, or that John Singleton or my cousin Malcolm Lee [would make]. As African-Americans, we’re not one monolithic group, so there is room for all of that. But at the same time, for me, the imaging is troubling and it harkens back to ‘Amos n’ Andy.’â€

OPINION: Why Tracy Morgan Isn’t Taking Us Two Steps

“Each artist should be allowed to pursue their artistic endeavors, but I still think there is a lot of stuff out today that is c**nery and buffoonery. I know it’s making a lot of money and breaking records, but we can do better. … I am a huge basketball fan, and when I watch the games on TNT, I see these two ads for these two shows (Tyler Perry’s “Meet the Browns†and “House of Payneâ€), and I am scratching my head. We got a black president, and we going back to Mantan Moreland and Sleep ‘n’ Eat?

comment by Kevin Johnson under the article...

Okay you missed the whole point of what he is trying to say!! Never once did Spike Leee even mention Tyler Perry's work as a director or any of his films!! Second, he is talking about two shows on TBS, that do make black people look like we just got our freedom papers!! I've seen Tyler Perry plays, movies, and tv shows. Although the message he trys to portray is a positive one, the way he goes about it is a little Amos and Andy like!! No one is hating on him or his accomplishments when they say that a show like Meet The Browns is some of the most c**nery sh*t on TV compared to anything else on tv because it is!!

Also,
I'm reading "Racism 101" by Soror Nikki Giovanni and she has a chapter (poem) in the book where she slams Spike Lee and his production of "Malcolm X". She then goes on to slam his other movies and how she feels they do not help Black America. I know I"m very late in reading her book...but it's interesting to read that chapter and then read this article about Spike slamming Tyler Perry shows.

Guess it goes to show, "to each his/her own..."!!

I don't like either of Tyler Perry shows, not for the same reason as Spike though...
I like Madea though :)

I don't see the issue. "Amos and Andy" really had no point...but neither did "I Love Lucy"....

People need to stop being so critical and start being supportive. Tyler Perry shows seem to have a meaning behind them all. I don't rush out to see his plays and movies but love me some "Mr Brown". Spike Lee has movies that serve their purpose and so does Tyler Perry. Also, the Tyler Perry previews are more "c**nery" than the actual shows.

Tyler's movies did have a message. I think what we all were hoping was that when "one of us" got in a position where they were in a position of power where they could create, bring and promote positive AA lifestyle messages, they would. Instead, TP seems to be doing what he did to get to the this point without any obvious growth, just the same mold. And since he's racking in the money--right now--he's not changing. But I hope he does before he loses a good deal of his audience. If that happens, even if he does change, they never hear it since they associate his name with this over here.

I agree with Spike Lee. I'm not saying I liked all of his movies (Malcolm X was a huge disappointment). But his comments are true about black entertainment today. Just because it's a majority black cast does not make it quality.

That's the beauty of America! Spike Lee can do the kind of movies he wants and Tyler Perry can do what he wants! I don't like Meet the Browns nor do i like House of Payne so i just don't look at them, it's easy to switch channels not that hard at all! I like Tyler Perrys' movies though, they have a good message! If Spike doesn't like what Tyler is doing, just don't look at it or support it, plain and simple but bashing the brother for what he is doing is ignorant! The people have their right to FREEDOM OF CHOICE, i guess Spike is hating because Tyler Perry is making more money than him now!:retard:

I wish Hollywood would stop allowing black TV shows, movies and all froms of black entertainment to stop being made. Black folks would be beter of if they had to only watch all white cast. This is what black folks need. That way we wouldn't have anything to call ourselves ashamed of and nothing to complain about.

I totally agree with Spike.. I have never watched a 3rd of an episode of none of them shows... they come off corny as hell... And it's painful to watch because I know of not ONE black family that closely resembles......

Malcolm X was one of the greatest/best movies ever made. I can't believe folks didn't like. That was by far Lee's best work.

Sometimes it's good to keep your opinions to yourself. I wish Lee would've took that approach. Even though I don't care for some of Perry's work, I give that brother made props for what he has accomplished.

I somewhat agree. I don't think it was his greatest work but it was a great movie.

I agree 100% with what Spike said but this is a free Nation. If Tyler Perry wants to make those movies then he has every right to. I do wish that we had more shows like the Cosby show, In Living Single, Moesha, ect.

Right... I have no issue with TP's shows being on TV even though I don't care for them. I choose not to watch. My issue is what are the other options tailored for "us." The Cosby Show and other shows that you named proved that we can be funny without being stereotypically.

Basically...black folks have always been and will always be our own worst enemy. We hate on each other all the time. We're not satisfied at all...if you don't like Tyler Perry then don't support him. Why do we feel, as black folks that we must come out and speak against one another in the public eye? I know a shitload of folks that don't like Spike Lee's work either...so what? People have a right to like or not like what they want, but sometimes we need to just STFU.

Tyler is doing his thing...he's very blessed and will continue to be, I believe. He has enough supporters apparently, cuz everything he touches seems to turn to gold...so hate on Spike and the rest. It ain't stoppin' nothin anyway.

Lemme see ... Spike Lee => sitcoms ... Tyler Perry ... drama. It seems that Perry has produced more dramas than Lee has produced sitcoms. :lecture:

Now where have I heard this preaching as for ENTERTAINERS making a LEGAL Living.:noidea:

I agree and share the same opinion as SPike.. but he could have kept that to himself, especially after that horrible "Kobe Goes To Work" crap he did.. straight boring...

Thing is we don't have a balance in what is show about us. I can put up with c**nery, but give me something of substance. I can't stand Bow Wow, Soulja Boy, Flavor of Love and I Love New York because it makes my job as an educator HARDER because there is very little to counter the images they showcase about us.

When you have kids have a drag out, destroy the classroom and break noses fights over I love New York. You know we are in trouble.:shame:

The thing is if someone tried to make a decent show about a black family that isn't "buffonish". WE WON'T WATCH IT! Especially if it has an image that uneducated black folk think isn't real.

Why do so many of our shows always have single women raising children or single men raising girls yet white shows have single men raising boys. If a father is raising a son, it's a cable show (Cory in the House) or Star Trek: DS9

I can understand what Spike is saying, but if he is that upset-why doesn't he and others get together to get "better" shows on tv?

He needs to upset that a lot of our positive shows, artists and others are being ignored in favor of buffonism by our black media. Something isn't right that you wll rehash or did up outdate material just claim you are talking about other black folks that don't need sex tapes, dumb dances, abusing girlfriends or gun happy grandmother for attention.
YES RIGHT ON, BLACK BEAT & WORD UP MAGAZINE-I'm talking about you!
Was rewriting Omarion like ice cream 30 times REALLY that important?

I think Spike is just talking about the need for balance. I like TP with the rest. He has a great moral compass and a good uplifting message but sometimes it get's lost in the delivery.

Why can't we have shows like Meet the Browns and show like 413 Hope Street or Lincoln Heights. Most often on network TV you only get the Meet the Browns, House of Payne type shows and if you want to watch shows that have more substance you have to go to cable.
