...I dont understand the purpose if it.

To me, its like you playin' to make the final field of teams. Does the NCAA have one to many teams in the Tourny? I dont like this play in game BS.

"Snake"

I understand what you're saying... Great Point, but think about it. If there was no Play-In Game... Bama State Wouldn't have that to play in... Then What would they be doing? NIT?

The SWAC, of all conferences, should be the last ones complaining.

ummm,
The SWAC has had an automatic bid LONG before the play-in game started.

To what? The "Play-in" game? That game is not even part of the tournament. You look at the brackets and all you see is #1 Louisville vs #16 Alabama St/Morehead. That dont look like an automatic bid to me.

Yes it is. The play-in game is part of the tournament. The teams in it get the same thing as the other teams.
One positive of it is that the teams get to play on national tv. In prime time. On ESPN. To open the tournament.

That still does not make it right..........the Ncaa Tourney struggled along with other conf's until they reached that level where they could compete effectively with the "big boys" and there were games that the swac schools have been a part of that were competitive or that member institutions have won (i.e.) Southern and Alcorn for example.

The play-in game is bullsnit.......either you're in the big dance or you're not......"L", if you're going send me off to get my head bashed in by a #1 seed.............at least do me the courtesy of not making me play some damn play-in game two days prior to sending me off to play Louisville, NC, MEM, PITT, or Duke.

I know that there is not a school in the SWAC that can afford to turn down $200-$250k for their school to participate in a sporting event that last approx two hours total time. I still don't like that damn play-in game.....

It cant be MH. It's not part of the 64 teams that make it.

I guess you're right.

The Opening Round game, (formerly known as the Play-In Game) of the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship is the first game of the tournament, played between the two last-seeded (i.e. 64th and 65th) teams. The winner of the game is then given a #16 seed and plays one of the #1 seeds that plays on the opening Friday in the first round of the tournament (to give the #16 seed an extra day of rest[citation needed]). To date, no winner of the play-in game has gone on to defeat the #1 seed in the next game. In fact, no #16 seed has beaten a #1 seed at all, including the ones that didn't have to play in the extra game.

The game was first played in 2001, when the Mountain West Conference, which had split from the Western Athletic Conference in 1999, received an automatic bid for the first time. Once the Mountain West Conference received its bid, the number of teams in the field increased from 64 to 65, requiring one team to be eliminated before the tournament entered its traditional 64-team bracket format. The NCAA Women's Division I Basketball Championship accommodated this change by eliminating an at-large bid, decreasing from 34 to 33, rather than adopting the opening round game.

The part in red is what I was talking about though.

Still don't like it though.

The play-in game is a bunch of BullSh, the SWAC or MEAC, one of those conferences has played in the play-in game every year since they started the play in game. Yea, I went there.

Folka,

True, except for the first year in 2001. Consider this fact. The SWAC is the only conference that has had a member of the conference play in the "Opening Round" game that has won both the conference regular season championship and the conference tournament championship. Even of more egregious treatment is the fact that this has happen three times: 1) Alcorn State in 2002, 2) Alabama A & M in 2005, and 3) Alabama State in 2009. Unfortunately we have lost two of those games with one to be played tonight. Leading many to debate that the NCAA selection committee was correct in their subjective analysis. We really need this win tonight.

the hornets are the swac's best hope. current player of the year, last years player of the year, current defensive player of the year, 2x coach of the year, 2x regular season champions. if this team can't beat morehead state..:kaioken: that said the hornets should win and have the potential to embarrass msu in a way only the swac is accustomed to being embarrassed.

and have the potential to embarrass msu in a way only the swac is accustomed to being embarrassed.
:lol::lol:

That's funny. Sad, but funny.
:lol::lol:

Hopefully HORNETS get off to good start. If Morehead's fans are worth anything, they should have a large crowd in Dayton.

GO HORNETS!

Let's put it this way.
Don't matter.

Whoever win's the SWAC tournament will go directly to the big dance or detour through the play-in game.
The SWAC winner will not be sitting at home even if the SWAC tournament winner has a record 10-20.
THAT 10-20 TEAM WIN THE SWAC TOURNAMENT, THEY GOT AT LEAST 1 MORE GAME TO PLAY GURANTEED.

Bottom line.
We don't want the play-in route, beat the UTEP's, and Oklahoma State's when we play them early in the season.

Look at the MEAC champ.
They have been in the play-in game the last 3 years.
This year, Morgan St. has win's against Maryland, Dupaul, and ran through the MEAC.
They got a 15 seed out of it this year.

It is the same line of thinking at prevents non-BCS schools in football from ever playing for the national title.

The pollsters and voters in football, along with the computers, penalize the smaller schools harder than BCS schools due to the notion it is likely that a Florida, Oklahoma or a Texas has better shot at winning than a Boise State or Utah.

HBCUs are Boise State and Utah, but the only difference is that the SWAC and MEAC usually gets there is a larger sample size of failure as it relates to competition against BCS schools.

I have been under the impression if HBCUs win in the regular season and win in the NCAA Tournament on a regular basis, the tournament committee might not put a SWAC or MEAC school in the play-in game every year.

I mean, hell, no SWAC school has ever won the darn play-in game.

This is the sports board, so we should just be dealing with facts.

1) ALL 65 TEAMS ARE IN THE TOURNAMENT. PERIOD. 65 teams make the tourny. Once the 65 teams are picked, the lowest seeded 2 teams play in the opening round game ("It is not named the playin game")

Let me give you an example. If the SWAC tournment went to all 10 teams, then teams seeded 7 and 10 and 8 and 9 would play first to make it to the round of 8, and then play the top 2 rated teams.

2) Once in the field, they are rated on who they beat and who they lost to. Not if they won the conference or tourneyment. Take LSU, SEC Champs got an 8 seed and the 3rd place team in the Big East got a 1 seed.

3) THe bottom line is SWAC basketball is weak. All this whinning and blaming, etc. when first and foremost we just need to get better.

The winner will receive 1.2 million dollars for this round, plus they get more if they win in the next round as well.

I wanna see more penetration from Alabama State. Morehead is doing a good job defensively of packing it in and forcing Hayles and Brooks'nem to shoot from outside.

Also defensively, Alabama State gotta do a better job of stoppin the ball in transition and cloggin up the lane.
