Southern, UAPB to meet in doubleheader today

Southern last won a baseball game March 1. And the Jaguars have played just two games since then, both one-run losses.

So, Southern would prefer to get in a couple games today, rain permitting.

Southern hosts Arkansas-Pine Bluff for a Southwestern Athletic Conference Western Division doubleheader of seven-inning games at noon today at Lee-Hines Field and then SU (3-6, 2-1 Western Division) and UAPB will play a nine-inning single game at noon Monday.

The teams were originally scheduled to play Saturday and today, but the series was postponed Friday after looking at the weather picture.

Because the Jaguars had an open weekend in their divisional play a week ago, they are itching to play.

“Early in the year, you want to play as much as you can so you can learn as much about your team as you can,” Southern coach Roger Cador said.

IMPROVED GOLDEN LIONS HEAD SOUTH

When Arkansas-Pine Bluff takes on Southern in a Southwestern Athletic Conference baseball matchup today, that team will look like the team from UAPB.

They’ll wear black and gold uniforms, and they might even have Golden Lions emblazoned across the front of their jerseys. And while that team will physically resemble the one that UAPB put on the field last season, that physical resemblance is where the similarities end.

Golden Lions’ coach Michael Bumpers said this team is much better than the one that won only 10 games last season.

“We don’t talk about last season at all hardly,” Bumpers said. “That was just one of those years where we just didn’t have enough pitching.”

The increased talent on the mound is the main reason that Bumpers believes his team can have a chance at winning the SWAC this season. The coach said his team had only four pitchers last season. This year, they have 14.

“When you go from 4 (pitchers) to 14, that’s a big difference,” Bumpers said. “Not guys that can just throw, but actually pitchers. They come in with a gameplan, and if they work their gameplan they can do well. Even those guys that pitched last year are a lot better off this year than they were last year.

I'm not gonna lie, I don't know too much about our baseball team. There's a lot of new members and I've lost contact with the team after the few band members graduated that was on the team. I've been told that the pitching was fire and there's even draft rumors for 2 of them. I hope that the team can make some noise because they will break ground on a 9 million dollar stadium complex and it would be a shame to have a facility like that and only win 4 games each year!

Go Lions!!!!

i dont think brooks has yet to pitch! once he and wahl get straight su should tuff on the mound. the defense and offense has yet to find a groove. this should be interesting tourney this year. even the east is getting stronger with bama a&m concentrating more on baseball. j-state still runs the east.

PB has a nice team, and are going to cause folks some big problems. With that new facility PB baseball recruiting is going to go thru the roof  . SWAC baseball is great. :)

Any word on the Gram-PV game? Hope we painted the "G" on the side of the helmets...that should guarantee a win against PV.

Thanks Bruh... guess we painted the "G" on the batting helmets. PV is our JSU of the West.

B-Rey is doing a great job. Im going to make the trip up to Gram when we go up there later in the season. Are you coming to the SU/Gram game on the yard on the 28th. Im going to tailgate.

My church has a fish dinner sale that day... I actually wanted to go to our Spring game in Gram on that day, but duty calls.
