Don't mean to belabor a serious situation, but I will.
Some of these allegations are akin to pure cowardice, torture and highly animalistic in nature. Is this the norm for a band initiation? Seems like it is to me, but the perps just happened to get CAUGHT this time. The third person who bowed out of the initiation saved himself from serious injury and maybe even his life.:shame::shame:

--Six men face charges linked to an alleged hazing incident

--Harvey Harrison, of Augusta, Ga., and Carlos-Andres Carter, of Stone Mountain, Ga., both 19, were arrested Tuesday. Four more suspects were arrested late Tuesday on the same charges, the sheriff’s office said. Authorities identified them as Jeremy Dixon, 22, of Natchez, Miss., Joseph L. Webb, 21, of Columbus, Ga., Lagarian Bridgewater, 22, of Baton Rouge and Aubrey Harris Jr., 20, of Canton.

--Three members of the band were beaten last Thursday with a two-by-four wooden board as part of an initiation into the band’s French horn section and are in serious condition in the intensive care unit at a Baton Rouge hospital. The third person withdrew from the alleged initiation.

--“They then had water splashed on them as senior members of the organization struck them numerous times with open hands. The three victims were then told to bend over at the waist, and the senior members began striking them numerous times with a large wooden board, commonly referred to as a two-by-four. One victim elected to stop the ritual after he had been struck over 50 times with the board,â€￾ the report said.

--The alleged incident happened at a home....

As an old SU band member myself, I'm totally disappoint in this type of behavior. At some point, young adults have to come to realize that beating another grown person azz does not make them a better musician or bands person. Routinely practicing with them and going over the field show does, not beating their azz.:shame:

On a serious note if these dudes are guilty I hope the law comes down on them hard. There is hazing and then there is doing dumb stufff. If they crossed that line they need to be dealt with.

On a much less serious note, they said it was seven French horn players? That ain't exactly the manliest of instruments. I just don't think I could let myself get beat down by a French horn player.

What are these kids thinking these days? :shame:

They must learn that there's a big difference between hazing and criminal behavior.

What I don't understand, when did instrument sections become like joining a fraternity?

ay get off the F.horn! :kaioken:

but on a seriou note....dude that left got hit 50 times already...I wonder how much were the other two sitting there and taking then....this is crazy. Folks think this ish is a gang..thats what happens when you have people apart of something that probably never been apart of anything or unaccepted..they take it TOO SERIOUS.

Dayum, I'ain know one of them was from C-town. :what: And they done put address out there and errthang!!! :smh:

That's MY question.

I marched in the Juke before some of ya'll were born and while we <ahem> "went through some things," it was NEVER this kind of straight brutality.

Granted, my section leader (the legendary Tracy D. Dyer -- much respect to this day, Big Brother!) didn't allow much foolishness of any kind in the trombone section -- he was focused on getting his 3.75 in Engineering while playing/marching his A$$ off -- and he demanded the same excellence from everyone in the section. We didn't have TIME to haze. Having said that, I can't remember even the WILDEST sections (cough DRUMMERS cough) beasting people to this extent.

Also, co-sign to the person in the other thread who remarked about Parents who previously marched. After you've been in one of these bands, you know the "real deal" b/c you were there. You know what the lies sound like and you know what the cover-ups look like. Trust me, if my son was in a hospital bed because of some shullbit like this, heads would roll and dollars would be paid.

This is out of control.

I wonder if Dr. Jackson may become the "fall guy" when the lawsuits begin rolling in. Just think of the many more folks who will come forward, especially if money's involved.

Damn, if that was my son I would be :upset:! I know hazing goes on in the band and in Fraternities and Sororities, but there has to be a limit as to what conspires during the process. Someone has to say to themselves that we are going way to far with the hazing. I pledged Omega Psi Phi, but there was a limit to what my LB and I could take and our dean had a limit to the amount of heat he allowed us to take. The young guys that were beaten should have said Fugg the band if you're going to beat me like that. I'm not blaming them for being beaten, but at some point you have to say it's not worth it.

How will Mr. Jackson become the "fall guy" if has taken the proper precautions to warn the members about this type of activity and this act took place at someone's home off campus?

I think that you're thinking a little too much. :retard:

Exactly Team. I was in the Jukebox for 4 years, my brother was in there for 3 and a half years and I've never seen or heard about anything like this.

Getting BEAT is not a process involved in becoming a member of the Human Jukebox.

Like the talent on our football teams, I truly believe the overall quality of students attending HBCUs have gone down drastically. I blame the boards and administrations for mess like this. They don't spend enough time promoting the University to kids with good intentions, but some of them that are on the board weren't your role model students themselves.

Damn, if that was my son I would be :upset:!

What would your feelings be towards your son for participating in something to such an extent?

I'm not talking about if he was laying in a hospital bed...clearly you'd be focused on his health.

But let's just say you found out he was involved in hazing activities, the school notified you b/c he has to testify, etc. When you see him/talk to him you realize that he has gotten his ass BEAT!! Can't walk straight, can't sit down, can't look you in the eye. Just looks bad. In addition to the fact that he's denying the fact that he was hazed.

Being familar with Baton Rouge, I'm sure there's lawyer trying to blame as many people as they can, even Doc. Greggs. Baton Rouge is definitely not short of Ambulance Chasers.

Dude, when the school leadership or board wants to convince the public and courts that they mean business, they'll sometimes throw the baby out with the bathwater. Hope this doesn't happen though, but one can't rule it out just yet.
Whatever fraternity this was that was caught, they're more than likely banned forever.:smh:

I have to agree with you on this one JayRob, because as an OMEGA MAN, I know far too well that blame extend farther than the individuals that actually committed the crime.

It's an unfortunate turn of events. I wonder if the ones issuing out the hazing received that sort of treatment when they were freshman? Now they're just messing it up for everyone. Well if these allegations are true, I hope they throw the book at em. No person deserves to be treated like that.

Jayrob just about every HBCU school and many PWC's as well have had lawsuits due to band hazing. When they want to show that they mean business they will throw the book at the guys who committed the act. I know for a fact that Mr. Jackson goes above and beyond when trying to prevent acts like this from occuring

That's not anything unique to just BR. That would be the case anywhere in this country.

This is the point my sorority makes. We tell the pledgees that allowing yourself to be hazed is WRONG and when you participate in the action and cover up you are guilty too. We expel them or don't initiate them if they are involved in hazing. It is working somewhat, but they still do it because of honor and code and not wanting to be a snitch. We made it a double edge sword and their obligation to report any hazing, physical, financial, emotional, whatever. They are obligated to tell and to say NO I will not allow you to haze me.

You have to start in the mentality of the members and those who are seeking to join. We all have to say hazing is uncool, in addition to criminal. Tigerpride stated that he supports hazing. I don't know what frat he is a member of, but most sororities and fraternities are requiring members to sign off on hazing. Tell no longer embrace it or be involved in it. Any member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. who publicly supports hazing is subject to termination of her membership.

We have to say going to somebody house to get beaten by a 2 x 4 is WRONG! When we all say hazing is wrong, then it will stop.

Those kids are in ICU struggling to live because they wanted to belong. That's really sad. And what is even sadder is there will folk who support hazing that will say the third one who left is a punk, not strong, not cool.

We have to say NO to hazing.

With the only two public law schools in the state and the state government, Baton Rouge most likely have more lawyers per capita than any city in Louisiana and probably ranks in the top 10 in the nation.

We do have the largest number in the state for the foregoing reasons, but we are nowhere near the top 10 in the nation. We are not all ambulance chasers either.
