Marshall Faulk says his early signs of progress as Southern University’s first-time head coach go beyond wins and losses.
Faulk, who is preparing for his first college head coaching job after taking over a program coming off a difficult two-win season in 2025, said Wednesday at SWAC Football Media Day that he is encouraged by the team’s development during the offseason, especially in areas that don’t always show up in the standings.
“I’m gonna say this early successes were we able to recruit? Yes,” Faulk said. “The players that we retained, did they get better? Did they get better through the offseason program? Yes. Those are some of the things that I like.”
Faulk said he also sees evidence that the Jaguars are beginning to function as a cohesive unit.
“Do we look like a team? Do we smell like a team? Are we moving like a team? Yes, that’s the early success,” he said.

Still, Faulk said he is leaving it to Southern’s administration to define broader expectations for the program, while making clear his own standard is simple.
“I can’t say what it is,” he said. “You’d have to ask my AD (Roman Banks), you’d have to ask the president, the chancellor, what they’re looking for and what success is for them.
Because my expectations is to win every game that we line up to play. That’s what I want to do. I’m trying to win every damn game we line up to play.”
