Texas Southern — the only school in the SWAC without a men’s basketball coach — is still in the middle of a pivotal transition on the hardwood.
After longtime head coach Johnny Jones departed for LSU in April, the university recently announced it has enlisted a search firm to identify candidates to ultimately be the next leader of Texas Southern basketball.
DHR Global — a nationally respected executive search firm — will lead the process.
Texas Southern made it clear the search will be thorough and competitive, with DHR Global working alongside the university to evaluate a wide pool of candidates, according to a statement.
Texas Southern has signed players amid coaching search
After Jones, who led the Tigers to three NCAA Tournament berths and three SWAC championships over eight seasons, left to work as an assistant at LSU, Shyrone Chatman was appointed interim head coach.
Since then, Texas Southern has signed four players, including Junior College All-American Jason Kimbrough, Gillette College transfer Sayed Sayed, Jacksonville State transfer Bencao Vungo and high school commit Jaylan Walton of Fresno, California.
A longtime assistant, Chatman is entering his ninth season with the program after joining the staff in 2017. His deep familiarity with the roster and culture provides a steady hand during a period of uncertainty.
The school said it will not provide any further updates about its search until a finalist is named.
