Following the departure of former men’s basketball coach Jay Butler, the Virginia Union Panthers are reportedly looking to a program legend to fill the vacant role.
According to Sean Robertson with CBS Sports, Virginia Union is expected to hold a press conference on Friday at noon to announce A.J. English as its next men’s basketball coach.
English will take over for Butler who departed from the Panthers after eight seasons, taking on the role as head coach at Winston-Salem State.
A former Delaware High School Player of the Year, English played for Virginia Union from 1986-1990, being named NCAA Division II Player of the Year as a senior.
He helped lead the team to two CIAA championships, making appearances in the Division II national tournament in each of his four seasons.
The Panthers’ guard entered the 1990 NBA Draft, being selected in the second round by the Washington Bullets. He played two seasons with the Bullets, averaging 9.9 points per game on 44% shooting before embarking on a career overseas.
This will be English’s first career head coaching job and will be the 11th in the history of the Virginia Union men’s basketball program.
