A North Carolina Central University athlete has been charged with raping a teammate, according to court records.
Alan Webster III, 19, was charged Wednesday with second-degree forcible rape in connection with a Jan. 13 incident, his arrest warrant shows.
Webster, a sophomore on the NC Central track and field team, turned himself in to police after an arrest warrant was issued on April 8, North Carolina court records show.
The incident was reported to campus police on March 25 and described as a “second-degree sexual offense” according to the police department’s daily crime and fire log. The university indicated the allegations were made on March 23, according to the News & Observer
He was initially held without bail after being taken into custody and later appeared in court on Thursday, the newspaper reported.

During the hearing, Webster’s defense attorney said Webster and the victim knew each other and that the encounter was consensual. The attorney informed the court that there were text messages between the two that needed to be reviewed by the district attorney.
A judge set Webster’s bond at $300,000, ordered him to stay away from the victim, who has not been identified, and placed him under house arrest.
North Carolina Central University said Webster is no longer a member of the track and field team as of Jan. 19.
