Southern running back Trey Holly wants to ‘run it back’ next season

Southern University running back Trey Holly is coming back to The Bluff after a breakout 2025 season.

The once highly-touted high school prospect and former LSU running back is opting to bypass the NCAA transfer portal and return to the Jaguars’ backfield.

Holly, one of Southern’s most explosive offensive weapons in what was otherwise a subpar unit, announced his plans in a blunt social media post, signaling unfinished business in Baton Rouge.

“Don’t like how last year went, SU let’s run it back #AGTG ITSPERSONAL,” Holly wrote on X, framing his return as both a challenge to himself and a message to the rest of the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

The decision keeps a proven playmaker and gives Southern a featured back around whom the offense can continue to build.

2025 was a breakout season for Holly

In 2025, Holly emerged as the Jaguars’ workhorse, finishing the season with 162 carries for 830 rushing yards and 9 rushing touchdowns, averaging 5.1 yards per carry.

He also contributed as a receiver out of the backfield, adding 126 receiving yards, and showcased his big-play ability with a long rush of 80 yards during the year.

Holly’s production helped stabilize an offense that otherwise struggled with consistency, as Southern finished with just one win despite staying competitive in several contests.

Holly turned in several standout performances, including a midseason stretch in which he shouldered a heavy workload against conference opponents.

He posted a 147-yard rushing day against Jackson State and later gashed Florida A&M for 145 yards and two scores in a home thriller, reinforcing his role as the focal point of Southern’s ground game.

Those efforts highlighted both his vision and toughness between the tackles, traits that made him one of the most difficult backs to contain in the SWAC last fall.

What Holly return means for Southern

By choosing to stay, Holly gives Southern a foundation piece on offense and a locker-room tone-setter who has already shown he can carry the load week after week.

His “ITSPERSONAL” mantra adds an emotional edge to a program looking to rebound from a disappointing record and reassert itself in the SWAC under Marshall Faulk.
