Damon Wilson loves Morgan State grit — but wants to see more from Bears

Morgan State head football coach Damon Wilson is proud of his team’s grit following a dramatic 24–17 win over Miles College in the Circle City Classic, but he knows there’s still work to be done.

“We got ourselves in a dogfight,” Wilson said. “Guys showed a little grit — with Blake getting the blocked field goal and Jadon [Carter] having an opportunity to scoop and score. It was good to get a win.”

The Bears (2–3) went into halftime up 10–0 in Indianapolis but had to battle late as Miles College mounted a comeback. A pivotal special teams play in the fourth quarter helped seal the win for Morgan State.

“We played well defensively in the first half,” Wilson said. “Offensively, we moved the ball but didn’t finish drives. The second half, we gave up big plays — we have to learn to finish ball games.”

Morgan State now turns their attention to Georgetown, where they’ll travel for a Saturday afternoon contest at Cooper Field in Washington, D.C. The game marks Georgetown’s homecoming and Wilson’s first visit there as a head coach.

“Georgetown’s a good football team. They run the ball well, and they’re stout up front on defense,” Wilson said. “It’s going to be a challenge for us. But our guys came out yesterday with good focus — had a solid walk-through and strength session.”

Despite being based in the nation’s capital, Georgetown football remains under the radar in the local sports conversation — something both Wilson and local media acknowledged during the call.

“They’ve always had a good coaching staff and good players,” Wilson said. “I’m not sure why folks in the area don’t realize that. Maybe Coach [John] Thompson and the basketball legacy had something to do with that.”

Wilson added that he previously coached a former Georgetown player at his former stop — Bowie State — and praised the level of talent within the Hoyas’ program.

When asked whether the team’s back-to-back close wins have been beneficial for building resilience, Wilson emphasized the importance of teaching moments — even if they’re born out of mistakes.

“Yes, you want reference points, but you also want to execute at a high level,” he said. “We had too many penalties last week. That was disappointing. But it’s always easier to teach after a win than a loss.”

The Bears have also been tested by injuries, particularly on the offensive line.

“We’ve been down three of the five starters since Towson,” Wilson said. “The good thing is younger guys are getting reps ahead of MEAC play. But we’re not building the continuity we want. Still — next man up. That’s college football.”

Morgan State faces Georgetown on Saturday, Oct. 4, with kickoff set for 1 p.m. at Cooper Field. The game will stream live on ESPN+.
