Grambling’s Doug Williams puts on proverbial bra and panties to wage a war against women

If the post-election political punditry we’ve observed these past couple of days is of any value, now that the presidential election is over, one can safely conclude that waging a war against women is a losing cause.

Just ask certain members of the Republican Party like Todd Akin or Richard Mourdock, two men who were favored to win their respective Senate races but lost due in part to ignorant and insensitive statements they both made about women and rape.

It’s apparent that Grambling head football coach Doug Williams hasn’t paid much attention to the political pundits.  Williams, whose team stands dead last in the SWAC’s Western Division with a conference record of 0-7, launched his own attack against women earlier this week while addressing the subject of outside critics of the program.

“Nine times out of 10, the loudest noise comes from somebody who never had a pair of cleats or a jockstrap on. And a lot of the women who don’t know anything about football will sit in the stands and say that they are running the same ol’ play.”

Welcome to the new low that is Doug Williams and the Grambling football program.  A man, who, this time one year ago, was battling for a spot in the SWAC championship football game, has now reduced himself to wearing the proverbial bra and panties to attack women who support the program because he doesn’t like what’s said about him in the stands.

Why would Williams want to attack women who support the program and understandably criticize him for potentially having the worst season in the history of the program?  He should understand that women – and men – who pay the price of a game ticket to watch his team play have the right to be critical of his team’s performance in the stands.

Did Williams ever stop to think that the women he claims to know nothing about football are the mothers, aunts, or sisters of the players he has on the field?  Did Williams ever stop to think that the women he claims to know nothing about football are staff and faculty members of the university? Did Williams ever stop to think that the women he claims know nothing about football knows enough to conclude that he is not getting the job done?

The answer to all questions is “no” because Williams doesn’t think.

Instead of playing the role of the head coach and being above typical responses of criticism that come with the position, Williams would rather reduce himself and the program by addressing those responses with petty comments that he often struggles to articulate properly.

If Williams is of the belief that a person, or in this case a woman, has to have worn cleats or a jockstrap to comment on the game of football, then I’m of the belief that a head coach needs to take public speaking courses before addressing members of the media.

My advice to Coach Williams?  Take off the proverbial bra and panties and man up.  The women in the stands are not responsible for your 1-8 start.  And should you return to the point of manhood, take another step and apologize to the women you’ve insulted in the process, because history has shown us that a war against women is a losing cause.
