Hickbottom signed with the Cologne Crocodiles of the German Football League in February. However, shortly after the deal was announced, Hickbottom informed the club that he would not play for Cologne because of the upcoming birth of his child.
The Defenders are led by former HBCU coach Reggie Barlow who had stints and Alabama State and Virginia State.
The Defenders hold the best record in the XFL at 8-1.
