It has been two months since Grambling State reassigned men’s basketball coach Bobby Washington following a disappointing 2011-12 season.
In that time the school has engaged in a extensive search to find his replacement.
While the university has yet to divulged candidates its interviewed or contacted for the job, it is believed that former Bethune-Cookman head coach Cliff Reed is among those vying for the position, sources say.
Coming off its most successful season in nearly 30 years, Reed was shockingly fired by Bethune-Cookman Reed last June.
Reed, who helped lead the Wildcats to a MEAC championship and NIT berth, was let go for allegedly refusing to cooperate in an investigation involving his son, C.J. Reed concerning his role in a possible sexual assault on campus.
The junior guard has since left the university, and reportedly committed to continue his college basketball career at the University of Central Florida. The longtime head coach would later file a lawsuit against Bethune-Cookman.
University spokesperson La’Monica Scott did not provide specific details about the Grambling’s search when reached by phone Monday afternoon, only saying that the process was still on-going.
However, those close to the program told TSPN Sports.com of being privy to similar reports about possible mutual interest between Reed and Grambling.
Washington was reassigned within the university and relieved of his coaching duties March 20.
The Tigers went 4-24 this past season under his watch, playing under a postseason ban and with a reduction in scholarships because of poor scores on the NCAA’s annual Academic Progress Rates report.
