The Week That Was In The SWAC

Casey Therriault isn’t afraid, Doug Williams’ lawsuit will be discussed by Louisiana state board meeting and a Conference USA school has interest in Sean Woods.

On the eve of the 2012 NFL Draft, former Jackson State quarterback Casey Therriault’s agent revealed that the record setting signal-caller will more than likely will not have his name called during the three-day nationally televised event.

“We both realize there’s a lot of talent out there and the question is where does he fit?” said Therriault’s agent J.R. Rickert.  “Is he worth a late round pick or does he fall to free agency? He’s prepared for either situation. He’s not afraid to come in as an undrafted free agent and earn his way.”

During his two-year stint at JSU, Therriault threw for 7,227 yards, 58 touchdowns while posting a quarterback rating of 96.3 in 22 games.

Here is what the scouts say about Therriault:

Skinny: The heady 6’3” signal caller generally makes good decisions, moves well in the pocket and keeps his eyes downfield with bodies flying around him. He typically lofts his passes when launching the ball downfield, placing just enough air under the ball to make it very catchable for the intended receiver. His most daunting challenge will be quickening his long delivery. In addition, Therriault tends to throw with a side-arm motion, which makes it easier for his passes to get tipped. As far as making plays as a pure runner, the senior triggerman will put his head down and fight for tough yards when necessary, but is long-limbed and not very graceful when doing so. — via NFL Draft Bible

On the agenda at the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors meeting will be the contract dispute regarding Doug Williams and Grambling State he filed April 13.

The lawsuit, which names Grambling State President Frank Pogue, the school, its board and both the state and state Department of Education as defendants, that Williams signed a contract with Pogue and former Athletic Director J.Lin Dawson and took the job pending board approval.

The lengthy seven-page claim surmises that Grambling and the state “knowingly lured Williams, through false and fraudulent promises and misrepresentations, into executing a contract that had no intention of ever being approved,” all with the intention of later attempting what was called a “bait and switch” techniques to force a re-negotiation.

According to reports, University of Southern Miss associated head coach Steve Barnes and Mississippi Valley State head coach Sean Woods appear to be the favorites to replace Larry Eustachy as the Golden Eagles’ basketball coach.

Woods, in his fourth year at MVSU, led the Delta Devils to a 21-13 record (17-1 SWAC) and berth in the NCAA Tournament.

Some of the other candidates include former Nebraska/UTEP head coach Doc Sadle,  Middle Tennessee State coach Kermit Davis and Wichita State assistant Greg Heiar.
