TSULogo Texas SouthernHOUSTON-The four year reign of Texas Southern women’s basketball head coach Yolanda Wells-Broughton has come to an end.  Coach Broughton resigned as head coach.

Yolanda Wells-Broughton:
“I would like to thank President Dr. Rudley and Dr. McClelland for the opportunity to coach at Texas Southern University.  The experiences that I have had as a head coach at Texas Southern have forever enriched my life.  I coached some remarkable young women who are poised to do great things both on and off the court.  I can assure you that I ran a clean program and we did things the right way.  The foundation has been laid for a successful future.  It has been my honor to serve and I wish the Texas Southern family the best for years to come.”

“I want to sincerely thank coach Broughton for her years of dedication to Texas Southern,” said Texas Southern Athletics Director Dr. Charles McClelland.  “She has truly laid a solid foundation for the program.  I am extremely appreciative for her dedication and hard work, and I will forever be grateful and supportive of her future endeavors.”

In Broughton’s four seasons with the Lady Tigers, her teams have made the SWAC Championship Tournament three of her four years and they have been in the semi-finals once (2010) and quarter-finals in 2012.  Broughton also produced the program’s first All-SWAC players since 2000.

Broughton reached out to the community with her free “Back to School” basketball camps where participants received free school supplies while learning the game of basketball, and projects such as “Think Pink” for breast cancer awareness, health fairs, “Feed the Hungry” with the Houston Food Bank, and the “Roughton Broughton” Kid Zone where activities were setup for kids in the community.

Dr. McClelland says a national search will begin for a new women’s basketball head coach.
