Mississippi Valley State 81, Prairie View A&M 57
PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas — Cor-J Cox scored a career-high 26 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, and Mississippi Valley State dominated the second half en route to an 81-57 victory Saturday over Prairie View A&M.
Cox was 12 of 17 from the field, including two 3-pointers. Terrence Joyner added 13 points for the Delta Devils (7-11, 6-0), who remained the only team unbeaten in Southwestern Conference play.
Louis Munks, the reigning SWAC player of the week, and Ryan Gesiakowski led the Panthers (7-12, 3-3) with 15 points apiece but saw Prairie View’s two-game winning streak snapped.
MVSU led just 41-40 at halftime as Prairie View shot 58 percent from the field. But the Panthers went cold in the second half, making just 6 of 27 shots.
The Delta Devils went on a 33-5 run that started just after halftime and ended with a Cox dunk with 5:51 to play. By then, MVSU led 74-47.
Texas Southern 69, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 55
HOUSTON — DaQuan Joyner had 15 points and nine rebounds to lead Texas Southern to a 69-55 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday. Fred Sturdivant added 12 for the Tigers (6-12, 5-1 SWAC), who shot 43 percent from the field.
Texas Southern led 34-23 at halftime.
Daniel Broughton matched Joyner’s numbers with 15 points and nine rebounds before fouling out for the Golden Lions (2-17, 1-5).
Savalace Townsend scored 12 points, making 3 of 7 3-point attempts. Arkansas-Pine Bluff made 35 percent of its field-goal tries.
Southern 75, Alabama A&M 69 (OT)
BATON ROUGE, La. — Quinton Doggett scored 21 points and Southern University defeated Alabama A&M 75-69 in overtime on Saturday.
Tied at 61 after regulation, it went back and forth for the first 2 minutes of overtime. Southern (9-11, 5-2 Southwestern Athletic Conference) trailed 67-66 with 2:22 left before Jameel Grace hit a 3 to put the Jaguars up for good, 69-67, with 1:50 remaining. Southern then went 6 of 8 from the free-throw line in the last 1:25.
The Bulldogs (3-12, 1-5) turned it over twice and went 1 for 2 from the field in the final 2 minutes. The Jaguars shot 77.4 percent from the free-throw line (24 of 31), including 8 of 10 in overtime.
Derick Beltran added 18 points, Michael Celestin 12 points and Grace 11 for Southern.
The Bulldogs were led by Casey Cantey with 17 points and Demarquelle Tabb with 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Alcorn State 61, Alabama State 60
ALCORN STATE, Miss. — Xavian Rimmer scored 13 points and Alcorn State withstood a final Alabama State flurry for a 61-60 victory Saturday night.
Ryan Watts stole the ball for the Hornets (7-11, 4-2 Southwestern Athletic Conference) with 13 seconds remaining, but Tramaine Butler and Stephawn Brown missed shots and Luther Page was unsuccessful on a final tip-in.
Both teams maintained a torrid second-half shooting pace. The Braves (5-14, 2-5) shot 68.4 percent (13 of 19) and Alabama State was even better, making 75 percent (15 of 20).
After Watts’ 3-pointer put Alabama State ahead 51-48 with 5:19 left, jumpers by Ken McDonald and Anthony Nieves and McDonald’s 3-pointer put Alcorn State ahead to stay, 55-51.
It was a far cry from the first half, when Alcorn State took a 22-21 lead after shooting 30 percent (9 of 30) to Alabama State’s 28.6 percent (6 of 21).
Butler’s 19 points led Alabama State.
Jackson State 80, Grambling 67
JACKSON, Miss. — Christian Williams scored 28 points to lead Jackson State to an 80-67 victory over Grambling State in Southwestern Athletic Conference play Saturday night.
Jackson State (5-14, 3-4) began the game with a 23-5 run and never trailed. Grambling State (2-15, 2-5) closed to within seven points at halftime, 35-28, but Jackson State increased its lead back to double digits, 40-30, on Kelsey Howard’s 3-pointer with 17:38 remaining. Jackson State never led by fewer than 10 points after that.
The win was the second in a row for Jackson State, which played without its leading scorer, Jenirro Bush. The senior guard ruptured his Achilles tendon in a 54-51 victory over Texas Southern on Monday.
Quincy Roberts scored 28 points to lead Grambling State. The junior guard came in averaging 27.5 points in his team’s six previous conference games, the best mark in the SWAC.
