MONTGOMERY – Alabama A&M used a late burst to pull away from Alabama State in a battle of intra-state rivals in the SWAC-TV Game of the Week at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome Saturday afternoon. Tied at 55-all with less than three minutes to play, A&M went on a 10-1 run down the stretch to bag the victory. The game featured 10 ties and 11 lead changes. Alabama State took its last lead at 49-48 with 6:16 to play on a pair of free throws by Tamara Wadlington. After twice falling behind by four points, the Lady Hornets rallied to tie the game for the final time on two free throws by Jasmine Quinn and a jumper by Quentori Alford with 2:38 to play. However, ASU only made one free throw the remainder of the game. The Bulldogs took advantage of the Lady Hornets’ foul trouble, making 11 of its 16 second-half free throws. The Lady Hornets were outrebound by the Bulldogs 45-33, with 19 of the rebounds coming off the offensive end. Whiquitta Tobar led Alabama A&M with 22 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Shundray Davis added 11 points for the Lady Bulldogs. Kierra Paige paced Alabama State with 14 points, while Danielle Gazaway added 13 and Alford had 12 points and nine rebounds.
Southern (5-7, 4-1) 82, Arkansas-Pine Bluff (0-15, 0-4) 61
Pine Bluff – Four players scored in double figures as Southern added to Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s misery on Saturday, leaving the Lady Lions still seeking their first win of the season. Essence Hopkins led the way for Southern with 19 points. Reigning SWAC Player of the Week Kendra Coleman added 15 points, while Adrian Sanders and Lechell Rush each tallied 13 points. Rush also had 10 rebounds. Chigozi Okwumabua paced UAPB with a game high 20 points. Lakendra Marsh contributed 11.
Texas Southern (2-12, 1-3) 54, Grambling State (6-9, 2-3) 51
Grambling – Texas Southern snapped a 10-game losing streak with a come-from-behind win on the road over Grambling. The Tigers trailed by as much as 15 points and 33-21 at halftime, but outscored Grambling 33-18 in in the second half to pick up their second win of the season. Gianne Fleming had 18 points to lead TSU. Crystal Anyiam added 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Kayla West tallied 11 points. Savannah Carter and Markisha Patterson had 12 points each to lead Grambling.
Jackson State (6-8, 3-2) 48, Prairie View (4-11, 1-3) 46
Jackson – Jasmine Greer’s layup with six seconds left to lift Jackson State to a dramatic win over Prairie View. The Tigers nearly blew a seven point lead in the final minutes. JSU led 45-38 with 4:45 left, but PVAM scored six straight points to take a 46-45 lead with 1:17 remaining. Greer tied the game with a freethrow with 49 seconds left. Then, after PVAM missed a pair of freethrows with 20 seconds left, Greer scored the game-winner with time running down. Greer was the only JSU player in double-figures with 12 points. Kiara Etienne led PVAM with 11 points. JaQuandra Williams added 10 points and Latia Williams grabbed 10 rebounds.
Mississippi Valley State (6-9, 3-1) 66, Alcorn State (5-10, 3-2) 58
Itta Bena – De’Kisha Fondon scored 16 points to lead a quartet of Mississippi Valley State players in double-figures. Khristina Clemons dropped in 12 points, Brittney Lakes added 11 and Ka’Neshia Smith tallied 10 points and seven rebounds as the Devilettes won their fourth victory in five games. Four players, Renelle Richmond, Shamika Breedlove, Carolinsia Crumbly and Karmeshia Thomas all scored 10 points to lead Alcorn State.
