A key piece from the Southern Jaguars’ secondary is heading to the MEAC as defensive back Tamaurice Smith announced Wednesday he will be moving on to North Carolina Central as a grad transfer.

Smith announced that he would be entering the transfer portal on January 27. He received offers from Norfolk State and Clark Atlanta before settling on North Carolina Central.

The former Jaguar’s collegiate career began at the University of Memphis where he played six games in two years, recording five total tackles and a pass breakup during the 2018 season before transferring to Southern the next season.

He spent three seasons with the Jags recording 66 total tackles (54 solo tackles), 4.5 tackles for loss, six interceptions and 19 pass breakups.
In his first season with Southern, he was named to the All-SWAC second team finishing the year tied for second in the SWAC in interceptions (5) and tied for fourth in passes defended (13).
This past year saw Smith finish tied for ninth in the SWAC in pass breakups (9) and tied for 13th in passes defended (9).
