Alabama State women dominate SWAC postseason honors

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southwestern Athletic Conference announced its 2020-21 All-SWAC Women’s Basketball teams and individual award winners on Tuesday afternoon. The all-conference honors were voted on by the league’s coaches and sports information directors.

Jackson State’s Dayzsha Rogan was named Player of the Year, while fellow teammate Ameysha Williams claimed Defensive Player of the Year recognition.

Arkansas Pine Bluff’s Khadijah Brown was tabbed Newcomer of the Year, Alabama State’s Farrah Pearson was selected Freshman of the Year, and Alabama State’s Freda-Freeman Jackson was voted SWAC Coach of the Year.

Rogan (Ripley, Miss.) led the league in scoring with 17.8 points per contest. She also finished 6th in the conference in field goal percentage (.435), 1st in free throw percentage (.803), 2nd in three-point field goals per game (2.5), and 7th in steals per game (2.0). She was a key contributor for a Lady Tigers team that would go on to claim the 2021 SWAC regular season title.

Williams (Gulfport, Miss.) ranked 5th in the league in scoring (15.7), 2nd in rebounding (11.5), 2nd in field goal percentage (.583), and 1st in blocked shots per game (3.1). She was another key contributor for a Lady Tigers team that was crowned the 2021 SWAC regular season champion.

Brown (Miami, Fla.) posted impressive numbers throughout the course of the season as she was a key figure on the offensive and defensive ends of the floor for the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Lady Lions. She ranked 8th in the league in scoring (15.2), 4th in rebounding (8.8), 4th in field goal percentage (.509), and 7th in blocked shots per game (1.3).

Pearson (Hazel Green, Ala.) ranked in the top 20 in the league in rebounds per game (4.5) and blocked shots per game. She was a key contributor for an Alabama State Lady Hornets team that finished ranked 2nd in the conference standings at the conclusion of regular season play. For the season she also averaged 7.2 points per game during her collegiate debut.

Freeman-Jackson led her team to a 2nd place (14-3 SWAC) finish in league play while nearly leading them to a SWAC regular season championship. Alabama State was projected to finish in the bottom half of the league standings (6th place) in the SWAC’s preseason poll which was announced prior to the start of the season.
