INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) has named Spring Hill College (SHC) softball catcher Aly Fowler as its 2019-2020 Woman of the Year, advancing her to the national round of selection for the NCAA Women of the Year Award.
A senior Biology/Pre-Health major from Dripping Springs, Texas, Fowler was hitting .348 in her career with 24 runs scored, 10 doubles, a triple, and 46 RBI in 98 games played before the Covid-19 Pandemic shutdown of NCAA sports in March. Splitting time between catcher and first base, Fowler fields at a .970 pace with 258 career putouts and 38 assists.
Fowler was a member of the 2019 SIAC All-Conference and All-Tournament 1st teams as well as a member of the Academic All-District 5 and the Academic All-America 2nd teams in 2019 and 2020. She is also a three-time member of the SIAC Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll and a two-time member of the SIAC Softball All-Academic Team.
Fowler was the 2019-2020 SHC Senior Female Student-Athlete of the Year as well as the Female Co-Academic Student-Athlete of the Year, holding a perfect 4.0 GPA upon graduation in May.
This award marks the first time an SHC student-athlete has won the SIAC Woman of the Year Award and it comes in just the school’s second year of eligibility for the honor after achieving full NCAA Division II and SIAC membership in 2018.
Rooted in Title IX, the NCAA established the Woman of the Year Award in 1991 to recognize graduating female student-athletes who have exhausted their eligibility and distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, service, and leadership throughout their collegiate careers.
The conference offices from each of the three NCAA divisions selected up to two nominees from their pool of member school nominees for 161 national nominees. The NCAA Woman of the Year Selection Committee made up of representatives from the NCAA membership will choose the Top 30 honorees with 10 coming from each division. The announcement of the Top 30 nominees will come in September.
The Committee will narrow the field to the three Division winners this fall with the 2019-20 Woman of the Year announced in November.
