Delaware State 72, Maryland Eastern Shore 58
DOVER, Del. — Delaware State defeated Maryland Eastern Shore 72-58 Monday evening in Memorial Hall Gym.
The Lady Hornets improved to 9-11 overall and 5-2 in the MEAC.
Lyric Turner led three Lady Hornets in double figures with 20 points, and she also added four rebounds. Lanayjha Ashe scored19 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Janasia Law recorded her first collegiate career double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Maryland Eastern Shore was held to just 22-for-66 (33.3 percent) from the field, including a lowly 2-for-20 (10.0 percent) on 3-point attempts.
Amanda Carney led UMES (4-16, 1-6 MEAC) with 10 points.
Howard 64, Coppin State 52
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Gia Thorpe led three Bison in double figures Monday evening with 18 points as Howard rebounded with a 64-52 win over Coppin State in Burr Gymnasium.
Ayonna Williams added 13 points and nine rebounds, while Krislyn Marsh had 11.
Coppin State jumped out to a 19-11 lead after the first 10 minutes, but the Bison (12-9, 5-4 MEAC) answered with a 24-9 second-quarter run that gave them a 35-28 lead at the break. A Jalynda Salley layup with 4:48 left in the third quarter to cut the lead to 41-38 and Chance Graham had the first bucket of the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 49-46.
But Howard closed the game on an 18-6 run to take control and keep the Eagles winless on the season.
Graham had 19 points and 15 boards in the loss.
Norfolk State 83, North Carolina Central 75
DURHAM, N.C. — Norfolk State used a second-half comeback behind La’Deja James’ career-high 36 points to beat North Carolina Central 83-75 at McDougald-McLendon Arena Monday night.
James’ 36 points is now tied for second all-time in single-game scoring in the Spartans’ Div. I history, as well as Norfolk State’s best scoring performance since Rae Corbo’s 37 points against Marshall in the 2014-15 season.
The Spartans’ comeback began in the third quarter, cutting a double-digit lead into single-digits heading into the final period. James started to take over in the third, scoring 17 of the Spartans’ 25 points in the quarter. James hit two treys in the period, while the Spartans went 4-of-6 (67%) from downtown as a team.
The Spartans entered the fourth quarter down 61-57, trailing the entire duration of the game up until that point. After a couple traded baskets from both teams, the Spartans went on an 8-2 run to tie the game at 69-69 following a layup by Blaire Thomas with 4:10 left in the game.
James shot 12-for-18 from the floor for her 36 points, and she also added nine rebounds and four assists. Thomas was the Spartans’ second-leading scorer with 18 points while adding 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season.
Shekinah Howard had a huge presence off the bench, going 3-for-4 from the field and hitting two threes for 11 points.
North Carolina A&T State 66, South Carolina State 55
GREENSBORO, N.C. — Four Aggies scored in double figures — and Jasmen Walton led the way with 17 points — as North Carolina A&T State kept pace in the MEAC race with a 66-55 win over South Carolina State Monday evening in Corbett Sports Center.
NCAT (15-6, 7-2 MEAC) also got 15 points from Cinia McCray and 10 each from Deja Winters and Mikaya Wilson.
The Aggies had just a two-point lead after the first half, and after three quarters, the lead was 48-43. With 8:14 left in the game, the Bulldogs cut the lead to 51-48 after a three from Chrisana Scott. But NCAT scored 15 of the game’s final 22 points to take the win.
Zeleria Simpson led S.C. State (3-20, 2-7 MEAC) with 17 points.
