Bethune-Cookman 74, Morgan State 65
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Daniella Hatcher had 19 points to lead three Wildcats in double figures on Monday, as Bethune-Cookman defeated Morgan State 74-65 in historic Moore Gym.
With the win, B-CU improved to 11-5 overall and 3-1 in MEAC play this season.
Ashanti Hunt recorded a double-double with 14 points and a team-high 10 rebounds, while Amaya Scott added 13 points.
A Scott jumper in the closing seconds of the third quarter gave the Wildcats a double-digit lead at 59-49, and they rode that momentum throughout the fourth quarter. Morgan State couldn’t cut the lead to single digits until the final minute, and even then, the Lady Bears never got any closer than within nine.
Ashia McCalla had 21 points to lead the Lady Bears (6-11, 2-2 MEAC).
Florida A&M 58, Coppin State 48
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Shalaunda Burney-Robinson had 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead Florida A&M to its first MEAC win of the season on Monday, a 58-48 defeat of Coppin State in the Al Lawson Center.
Kailyn Jackson (12 points) and Alaina Rice (11 points) were also in double figures for the Rattlers.
A 20-6 second quarter gave FAMU (3-12, 1-3 MEAC) a 32-18 lead at the half, but the Eagles answered in the third quarter, using an 18-5 run to cut the lead to 37-36. FAMU responded, taking a 45-38 lead into the fourth quarter.
Another Coppin State run cut the lead to 50-48 with 2:28 to play, after a Tyree Allen layup. But Coppin State went the remainder of the game without scoring, as the Rattlers poured in the final eight.
Chance Graham led Coppin State (0-16, 0-4 MEAC) with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Howard 78, South Carolina State 47
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Howard ended its three-game homestand with a dominating 78-47 victory over South Carolina State inside Burr Gymnasium Monday evening.
With the win, Howard (10-7, 2-2 MEAC) snapped its brief two-game slide while moving back to .500 in league play.
Howard outscored the Lady Bulldogs in all four quarters and limited SCSU to only 23-percent (14-for-60) shooting.
Offensively, Howard shot a respectable 48-percent (31-for-65) from the field. Five Bison reached double figures, led by Jayla Thornton with 14 points, while senior Sarah Edmond added 13 points in the win.
Howard also controlled the glass all night, outrebounding SCSU 56-34. Senior forward Imani Bryant grabbed a game-high 14 boards in the victory.
Zeleria Simpson had a team-best 13 points for South Carolina State (2-15, 1-2 MEAC), while Jacquece Alson netted 12 points.
Maryland Eastern Shore 65, North Carolina Central 63
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. — Maryland Eastern Shore withstood a late charge from North Carolina Central on Monday, escaping the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center with a 65-63 win for its first conference victory of the season.
Bairesha Gill-Miles led the Hawks (4-12, 1-2 MEAC) with 15 points, while Brooklyn Bailey added 14 points and Mya Thomas had 10.
North Carolina Central led 49-46 with 7:56 remaining in the game, before UMES scored 11 unanswered to take a 57-49 lead after a Thomas layup with 4:16 left. The lead ballooned to eight again, 59-51, following a Bailey jumper at the 3:37 mark.
The Eagles fought back in the closing minutes, and a Faith Williams trey cut the lead to two in the closing seconds, but it wasn’t enough for North Carolina Central to complete the comeback.
Paulina Afriyie (16 points, 16 rebounds) and Anissa Rivera (12 points, 10 rebounds) both had double-doubles for the Eagles (4-12, 1-2 MEAC).
North Carolina A&T State 69, Delaware State 45
DOVER, Del. — Cinia McCray dropped 23 points, and Delaware State was held to two third-quarter points, as North Carolina A&T State defeated the Hornets 69-45 in Memorial Hall Gym Monday evening to stay unbeaten in league play.
C’coriea Foy added 12 points for the Aggies (11-4, 3-0 MEAC).
Tierra Floyd force a 28-28 tie at the break with a layup in the closing minute of the first half, but the tide turned in the third quarter — when the Aggies held Delaware State to one field goal in the frame — a Lanayjha Ashe jumper in the opening minute.
By the time the fourth quarter started, NCAT had a 50-30 lead.
Janasia Law led the Hornets (6-10, 2-1 MEAC) with 10 points.
