Howard University head football coach Ron Prince was placed on administrative leave Wednesday, according to a university statement published by HBCU Digest.
Prince will remain on administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation into charges that he verbally abused and mistreated the players on his team.
“Howard University is committed to completing our internal investigation of the allegations involving concerns about the football program,” Howard athletic director Kery Davis said in a statement. “As a result of our continuing investigation, the University has decided to place Head Football Coach Ron Prince on administrative leave effective immediately. Director of Football Operations Aaron Kelton will serve as the interim coach until further notice. Howard University is committed to ensuring our athletic programs reflect Howard’s core mission and values and to ensuring the well-being and success of all student-athletes.”
The Bison, currently 1-8 on the season under Prince, made headlines earlier this season when a number of Howard players – including standout quarterback Caylin Newton – announced that they would be transferring to other schools.
Howard’s next game will be Saturday in Orangeburg, S.C., against South Carolina State.
