HOUSTON — The Tigers of Texas Southern University will play football games in Houston in 2019, according to the schedule released by the school’s department of athletics Wednesday.

Texas Southern will play three true home games. TSU’s Homecoming game against Missouri S & T on Saturday, Oct. 12 will be played on campus at Durley Stadium. The team will also return to Dallas the following weekend for the State Fair Football Showdown against Southern.

The TSU schedule will also feature seven true road games. The nonconference schedule includes trips to Southland Conference opponents Incarnate Word and Houston Baptist, and a game at FBS opponent Louisiana — Lafayette.

“We think our schedule is a pretty competitive schedule, with quite a few road games,” TSU’s head football coach Clarence McKinney said. “We’re excited about knowing who we’re going to play; we just have to get ready for it.”

The Tigers will face all four of their opponents from the Southwestern Athletic Conference’s West Division, as well as three teams — Alabama A&M, Alabama State, and Mississippi Valley State — from the East Division.

The Tigers will open the season Saturday, Aug. 31, when they host the Labor Day Classic against rival Prairie View A&M at BBVA Compass Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

TSU will then play four games on the road, though one of them will be a short drive from the campus — the Sept. 28 game at Houston Baptist. That game will start at 6 p.m.

The Tigers will then return to the Texas Southern campus for Homecoming on Oct. 12 at Durley Stadium. The Tigers host Missouri S & T in a nonconference game, which is scheduled for a 2 p.m. kickoff.

“I think it’s going to be huge,” McKinney said of returning the Homecoming game to campus. “The campus is the home base for homecoming. People can just leave their tailgates and walk right into the stadium; hopefully, we’ll have a large crowd.”

After the Dallas trip and road games at Mississippi Valley State and Grambling State, the Tigers will play their home finale Saturday, Nov. 9 at BBVA Compass Stadium. The Tigers will kickoff against Alabama State at 2 p.m.

TSU concludes its regular season Saturday, Nov. 23 at Arkansas — Pine Bluff.
