EUGENE, Ore. – Behind a perfect shooting night from big man Trayvon Reed as well as sharp shooting from John Jones, Texas Southern (2-4) took down No 18 Oregon late Monday night in comeback fashion, prevailing 89-84 at Matthew Knight Arena.
Reed led the Tigers with 23 points on 9-of-9 shooting while corralling seven boards and blocking a shot. Jones racked up 20 points off the bench with hot shooting from behind the arc. Jones went 4-of-7 from three-point range while also contributing two rebounds in 26 minutes of action.
Derrick Bruce and Jalyn Patterson scored 13 points each while Jeremy Combs tallied 11 points and seven rebounds to round out the list of Texas Southern double-digit contributors. Patterson posted a double-double also contributing a game high 11 assists.
Down 39-32 at the break, Texas Southern trailed by as many as 13 with 16:28 left to play. From there, Jones and the Tigers found their stroke from long range. Jones buried a pair of treys to help cut the deficit to five, and after three balls by Devocio Butler and Justin Hopkins, Reed emphatically tied the game at the midway point with a dunk, making the score 59-59.
Reed went on to score six unanswered points to put Texas Southern in the lead, and Patterson nailed a three-pointer in response to a deep ball from Oregon’s Victor Bailey Jr. to make the game 66-64 TSU with just under nine minutes left.
Texas Southern never trailed from that point, though Oregon tied it at 75 with 3:20 left. Reed responded with four quick points, and Bruce closed the deal with eight points over the final minutes.
The loss was only the fourth non-conference defeat for Oregon since the Ducks opened Matthew Knight Arena in 2011. Texas Southern shot 47.8 percent from the field while Oregon shot 48.5 percent. TSU was able to put up 38 points in the paint to go along with 20 points in transition.
