pvlogoJACKSON, Miss.- The Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers (9-7, 4-0 SWAC) handed the Jackson State Lady Tigers (6-8, 4-1 SWAC) their first conference loss of the season defeating JSU by the score of 57-51 in overtime.

Prairie View A&M used a balanced scoring attack and some timely buckets to come away with the victory. With the win PVAMU remains undefeated in SWAC play.

Regulation play ended with both teams tied at 45 points apiece. In overtime Prairie View A&M opened up a four-point lead at the 1:21 mark of the period at 53-49 after a successful Candice Thomas lay-up.

Jackson State cut into the Lady Panthers lead closing the gap to two points at 53-51 with 47 seconds remaining.  After a JSU foul, Gaati Werema subsequently went to the line and sank two free throws to push PVAMU’s lead back to four points at 55-51 with 23 seconds left to play.

PVAMU got a defensive stop at the other end of the floor forcing a LaShonda Gaines turnover. Shavonne Smith would add two more points from the charity stripe with five ticks left on the game clock as Prairie View A&M went on to win their seventh consecutive contest.

Thomas led all scorers with 16 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the floor. Chari Smith and Werema added 14 and 12 points respectively.

Prairie View A&M will now get set to travel to Grambling, La. to play the Grambling State Lady Tigers at the GSU Assembly

Center as they look to make it eight straight. The contest has been set for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
