College football is back.
No, Black College Football is back.
On Saturday. None of that Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or even Sunday bologna that throws off all of our equilibriums in late August.
The bands. The cheerleaders. The 4-7 seasons many schools will assuredly have. Ah, can’t wait for the first true opening day across the HBCUdom.
In honor of Serena Williams giving birth to the next great black tennis player, here are the Week 1 prognostications.
SATURDAY – SEPTEMBER 2
Alabama A&M at UAB
UAB disbanded its football team a few years ago. The Blazers will likely do the same to the Bulldogs, too.
Mississippi Valley State at North Dakota State
There will be plenty of time to play Madden 18 after the first quarter in this one.
Morehouse College at Arkansas-Pine Bluff
Monte Coleman is still plugging away at the Bluff, huh?
Miles College at Alcorn State
The defending SWAC East champions were able to avoid Grambling State in the season opener, I see.
Tuskegee at Alabama State
When Rick Comegy was hired at Jackson State more than a decade ago, he bragged about all the success he had beating SWAC opponents while at Tuskegee. Willie Slater is no Rick Comegy.
Grambling State at Tulane
The best team in HBCU football starts the season against the Green Wave in New Orleans. Too bad Southern isn’t the opponent.
Jackson State at TCU
ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit picked the Horned Frogs to win the Big 12 this season. Has he seen the Oklahoma State offense? Never mind how wrong he is. But at least TCU will have a win going into Week 2.
Florida A&M at Miami
Morgan State at Towson
Virginia State at Norfolk State
North Carolina A&T at Gardner-Webb
North Carolina Central at Duke
Hampton at Ohio
Howard at UNLV
Elizabeth City State vs. Central State
Lincoln (Pa.) Cheyney
SUNDAY – SEPTEMBER 3
MEAC/SWAC Challenge
S.C. State at Southern
The MEAC has won the last five matchups against the SWAC. Southern, in 2010, gave the SWAC its last win. All good things must come to an end, right?
