DeSean Jackson made one thing clear during MEAC Football Media Day: Delaware State isn’t interested in celebrating what happened last season.
The Hornets head coach said the program’s rapid turnaround from conference doormat to actual championship contender in his first season created excitement around Dover. But the ultimate goal—winning a championship—remains unfinished.
“We can’t hold our hats on what we did last year,” Jackson said after leading the Hornets to an 8-win season in 2025. “We accomplished some great things, but we came up short. We’ve had that sour taste in our mouths all offseason.”

That disappointment has fueled an offseason centered on development rather than reflection.
Jackson said Delaware State attacked spring practice, summer workouts and roster reconstruction with one objective.
“We’re not going to take a step back,” Jackson said. “Our trajectory is always going up.”
The Hornets won’t resemble last year’s squad.
Graduation and the transfer portal forced Delaware State to rebuild much of its roster. The Hornets lost top running backs Marquis Gillis and James Jones — who help lead the FCS in rushing — to the transfer portal in the offseason. Also gone is All-MEAC lineman Isaiah Cook, who bolted for Rutgers.
Jackson and the Hornets did add 18 new players on National Signing Day, including ex-Virginia Tech tight end Marquis Smith and William & Mary quarterback Noah Brannock to compete for the starting job in fall camp.
“The dynamics have changed tremendously,” Jackson said. “We lost guys to the portal. We lost graduate players. We had to go into the portal ourselves. We found Division II guys, junior college guys. We rebuilt the team.”
Rather than viewing roster turnover as a setback, Jackson believes the fresh faces fit the culture he’s trying to establish.

Jackson admitted entering last season with virtually no collegiate head coaching experience.
Instead of hiding from that reality, he embraced it.
“I learned on the go,” Jackson said.
The former NFL Pro Bowl receiver said many coaching situations simply cannot be simulated until a coach experiences them firsthand.
Calling timeouts. Managing fourth-down decisions. Handling momentum swings.
“You couldn’t coach me through those situations,” Jackson said. “I had to live them.”
Perhaps his biggest lesson?
“Go with my gut.”
Jackson joked that nearly every decision he regretted came when he ignored his instincts.
“The 15 percent of the time I didn’t go with my gut is when things didn’t go as planned,” he said.
Hornets still have a lot to prove in MEAC
Jackson dismissed suggestions that Delaware State simply exceeded expectations a year ago.
Instead, he believes the Hornets performed exactly the way their preparation demanded.
“Our standards are high,” Jackson said. “We don’t dumb down our standards for anybody.”
With expectations rising throughout the MEAC, Jackson insists last year’s success represents only the foundation.
“We’ve got a hungry football team,” he said. “They don’t get caught up in the hype. They’re ready to prove it.”
