Alabama State 75, Prairie View A&M 61
PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Britney Wright poured in 26 points and eight rebounds as Alabama State downed Prairie View A&M 75-61.
The Lady Hornets’ victory was keyed by their performance in the paint, as they scored 44 of their points inside, compared to Prairie View’s 22-point output in the interior. Alabama State held an advantage for much of the night, until Prairie View A&M (8-13, 3-6 SWAC) tied the game at 22-all with 6:24 remaining in the opening half. There, Alabama State (8-11, 7-2 SWAC) went on a 12-3 run to close out the half and take a 34-25 halftime advantage.
Prairie View A&M was able to pull within four at 36-34 with 4:46 to play in the third quarter, but the Lady Hornets outscored 27-18 over the next 11 minutes to extend their lead to double digits at 63-52. The lead stayed in double figures down the stretch as the Lady Hornets knocked down seven of their last 10 free throws for the final margin.
Tatiyana Calhoun chipped in 16 points and seven boards for the Lady Hornets. Alexus Parker led Prairie View A&M with 15 points, while Tori Carter added 14 and Jeronia Allen 10.
Grambling State 88, Mississippi Valley State 67
GRAMBLING, La. – Four Lady Tigers scored in double-figures as Grambling State overran Mississippi Valley State 88-67 Monday night.
The Tigers came out on fire in the first quarter, scoring the game’s first seven points. MVSU would respond with a 10-0 run, but GSU closed the quarter on a 24-5 run that left Mississippi Valley playing catch up the rest of the way. The Lady Tigers (8-12, 6-3 SWAC) would continue their scoring binge, as the Devilettes could get no closer than 18 points. Grambling remained in the driver’s seat, leading by as many as 30 in the game.
Kiana Jones led GSU with 20 points. Jazmine Torain added 17 points and five boards. Shakyla Hill had a stat-stuffing night with 15 points — on 6-for-6 shooting — with eight boards, five assists, five steals and a block. Jazmine Boyd added 11 points.
Ashley Beals put in 27 points and eight boards for MVSU, and Kristy Parker added 14.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff 78, Jackson State 71
JACKSON, Miss. – Arkansas-Pine Bluff bested Jackson State 78-71 behind a 17-point, 11-board effort from Faith Ohanta Monday night.
The Lady Tigers led for much of the early portions, but UAPB managed to tie things at 22 via an Ajia Richardson lay-up with 7:38 left in the second quarter. The teams would trade the lead from there before JSU (7-12, 1-8 SWAC) asserted themselved down the stretch to build a 38-34 halftime lead.
UAPB took things over in the second half, starting it off with a 10-3 run to claim a lead. Jackson State would swing things around in its favor briefly at times, but Ohanta led the way for the Lady Lions (7-13, 4-5 SWAC), scoring seven points, many of them in the closing moments.
Richardson scored 16 points with four rebounds and three steals. Niya Head aided UAPB with 12 points.
For Jackson State, Kierra Adams put up 16 points and nine rebounds. Derica Wiggins added 13, and Maria Conyers-Jordan posted 11.
Texas Southern 60, Alabama A&M 51
HOUSTON – Joyce Kennerson scored 27 points and picked up six boards and three steals to lead Texas Southern past an upset-minded Alabama A&M squad 60-51.
The Lady Tigers (13-7, 7-2 SWAC) appeared on their way to a blowout, ending the quarter ahead 21-8. The Lady Bulldogs would fight back into it, using a 13-4 run to cut the deficit to four during the second quarter. However, SU responded by increasing its lead to 13 in the frame, and the sluggish first quarter ultimately proved the difference as the Tigers managed to stave off every comeback attempt by Alabama A&M (2-16, 0-9 SWAC) from that point. TSU led by double-digits during the later stages of the game, with AAMU getting no closer than six.
Artavia Ford added 10 points. Lauren McKee led the Lady Bulldogs with 22 points, and Hilary Williams added 14. AAMU’s leading scorer Jameica Cobb struggled on the night, scoring six on 2-for-12 shooting.
