Top-seeded Kentucky State wasted no time in defeating Stillman 86-53 in a quarterfinal matchup in the SIAC Women’s Basketball Tournament Wednesday.
KSU (23-3) its 16th consecutive victory as it advanced to the semifinals on Friday where it will take on the winner between Albany State Central State Thursday.
KSU took a comfortable 34-19 lead at halftime and continued to control the remainder of the game. KSU finished with three players in double-digit scoring as it was led by Jamesha Mosley’s 16 points. Mosley also finished with eight rebounds. Aliyah Gipson tallied 13 points and Joymesia Howard added 10 points and nine rebounds.
Stillman (11-16) was led by Joclyn Ramos who recorded 18 points and eight rebounds. Schenia Battle tallied 12 points. Victoria Douglas grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
Benedict eases past Paine to move to SIAC semifinals (women)
Benedict opened the SIAC Tournament quarterfinals with a 68-55 win over Paine on Wednesday.
The Tigers (25-2) captured their fifth straight win while the Lady Lions finished the season with a 10-19 record.
Terri Jacobs was phenomenal for the Tigers as she posted a double-double with 16 points and a game-high 17 rebounds. Regime McCombs led all players in scoring with 18 points. Defensively, the Tigers took a 62-35 advantage on the glass.
Chasity Mullins finished with 16 points for Paine ahead of Aalyiha Wright who recorded 13 points and six rebounds.
The Tigers advance to the semifinals to face the winner between Miles and Claflin on Friday afternoon.
LeMoyne-Owen stuns Benedict with double-digit comeback (men)
LeMoyne-Owen erased a 12-point halftime deficit and upset Benedict Wednesday.
The Magicians (15-14) trailed 40-28 at halftime but used several runs throughout the second half to chip away at the Tigers’ lead. Dontarion Wright gave LeMoyne-Owen its first lead of the half, 50-48 at the 11:15 mark with a layup from Justin Street.
After exchanging baskets, Rashawn Brown connected on a 3-pointer to give the Magicians a 55-52 lead which they held for the duration of the game.
Brown led LeMoyne-Owen with a game-high 24 points and seven rebounds. Street recorded 22 points and eight rebounds. Jerry Hampton led all players in rebounds (10) and finished with 10 points. Larry McGaughey also added 10 points.
Brennan Reynard finished with 17 points for Benedict ahead of Quiron Cooke who tallied 15 points.
The Tigers who were the 2015 SIAC tournament champions, finished the season with a 16-12 record.
LeMoyne-Owen will face the winner between Miles and Claflin on Friday.
No. 3 Central State tops No. 6 Clark Atlanta
No. 3 Central State defeated No. 6 Clark Atlanta 79-51 Tuesday afternoon in an opening round game at the 2016 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Women’s Basketball Tournament at Bill Harris Arena in Birmingham, Ala.
CSU improved to 14-13 overall with the win while the Panthers finished the season with a 6-21 mark.
The Marauders dominated the entire game and were led by Ghameerah McCullers who recorded 13 points and eight rebounds. McCullers also added four steals and three assists. Sierra Harley finished with 10 points.
