Southern’s home opener was a successful one as the Jaguars outlasted Tulane 90-82 at the F.G. Clark Activity Center on Thursday.
The Jaguars (2-1) fell behind by as many as eight points in the first half (20-12), but Southern used an 18-4 run to take control. The Jaguars closed the half strong and took a 39-35 lead into intermission over the Green Wave.
Southern was able to keep a slim advantage for much of the second half, but when Tulane pulled to within four with 9:08 left in the game, the Jaguars nearly put the game out of reach with an 11-4 scoring run that put them up 75-64 with 6:47 left.
The Jaguars allowed Tulane to get within 2, as the Green Wave was able to score enough to get the contest at 84-82 in favor of Southern, but Christopher Hyder and Shawn Prudhomme iced the game at the free-throw line, scoring the game’s final six points.
Adrian Rodgers led SUBR with 20 points, and was one of five Jaguar players in double figures. Jared Sam scored 17 points and pulled in seven rebounds. Hyder added 15 points and two steals, Prudhomme scored 13 points and swiped three steals, and Trelun Banks chipped in 12 points and three assists.
For Tulane, Malike Morgan was the high-scorer with 18 points. Louis Dabney and Dylan Osetkowski each scored 16, with Osetkowski grabbing 10 rebounds as well.
Southern scored 23 points off turnovers compared to Tulane’s nine points and outscored the Green Wave 36-30 in the paint.
