GoFundMe online campaigns usually are reserved for individuals or groups who want to raise money to help pay for medical treatment, charities or a last-ditch effort to secure funding for funeral expenses.
Cameron White used the popular fundraising website to help him continue his college football career at Grambling State.
White, who missed parts of two seasons with concussions while at Texas Christian University, was able to secured $2,200 to complete a transfer to Grambling.
According to the News Star, White received donations from a combination of friends and family members that went toward housing, which enable him to earn his degree.
“That was my case where everybody wants to see me succeed because they know I’ve been through a lot of things in my past being with TCU and having two kids,” White told the newspaper. They just wanted to help me. It was a tremendous gesture for them to donate anything they had.”
Before joining Grambling, White, a 6-3 wide receiver, considered Rutgers.
When that opportunity fell through, it was the help of his high school coach in DeSoto, Texas that arranged a meeting with Grambling that led to White eventually signing.
“It was real tough,” White said of the process. “I didn’t want my talent to go to waste when I know I can play, and maybe even play at the next level. It’s one of those things I had to suck it up and be patient.”
“I’m not here to be a one, two or three,” he said. “I’m just here to contribute.”
