A pair of MEAC baseball teams will square off on the corner to Yawkey Way next month.
Florida A&M and North Carolina Central will play at Fenway Park — home of the eight-time World Series champion Boston Red Sox — on April 25.
“It should be exciting, and I am happy for the kids to get this opportunity, ” FAMU coach Jamey Shouppe told the Tallahassee Democrat.
“We will make sure when we go that they understand the history behind it. And enjoy the fact that they get to play in a big-league venue.”
The Red Sox wanted to host the game to expose Bostonians to historically black colleges and universities, according to the newspaper.
FAMU and Central will open their three-game MEAC series on Friday, April 24, with a doubleheader at Jim Rice Field at Ramsey Park in Roxbury, a neighborhood in Boston.
D’Wayne Robinson, FAMU’s interim athletic director, said the trip will give the university an exclusive opportunity to connect with alumni and reach prospective students and student-athletes.
He credited the event’s message on the importance of diversity.
FAMU and North Carolina Central were scheduled to play their series in Tallahassee.
“I feel like it’s going to be a great experience,” FAMU pitcher Ryan Anderson said.
“Even though we are playing in a major league park, we (want to) play the same game that we usually play and work hard like we know how to. It will be pretty fun.”
