Report: NCAA To Restore Joe Paterno’s Vacated Wins; Eddie Robinson To Not Remain All-Time Wins Leader

The NCAA is preparing to move forward with plans to restore the 111 wins it removed from Joe Paterno as a result of the lingering Jerry Sandusky child molestation case.

The collegiate governing body announced Friday that a proposed agreement will put Paterno back as the all-time winningest head coach in Division I history surpassing Grambling State head coach Eddie Robinson.

College sports’ governing body announced the proposed deal weeks before a scheduled trial in state court on the legality of the 2012 consent decree it would replace.

The new deal would direct a $60 million fine to address child abuse be spent within Pennsylvania and would resolve the lawsuit.

The deal still must be approved by the NCAA board and the Penn State board. Penn State trustees’ chairman Keith Masser told The Associated Press that board members were having a private discussion early Friday afternoon about the lawsuit.

The announcement follows the NCAA’s decision last year to reinstate the school’s full complement of football scholarships and let Penn State participate in post-season play, and comes just days after a federal judge declined to rule on the consent decree’s constitutionality. The proposed settlement does not discuss the validity of the original consent decree.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported earlier this week, the NCAA and Penn State were discussing reconsidering penalties levied against the school.

On July 23, 2012, the NCAA stripped Paterno 111 of 409 wins, putting him 12th on the all-time list with 298.

Former Florida State head coach Bowden was then recognized as the FBS wins leader while Eddie Robinson reclaimed his position as the most winningest head coach in Division I history.

The vacated wins date back to 1998, when the Freeh report showed leaders at Penn State were notified of Sandusky’s actions. The Freeh report states that leaders — including the president, vice president, athletic director and head football coach — did not act appropriately when they were alerted of possible child sexual abuse with the assistant head coach. Emmert referred to those violations as “perverse and unconscionable.”

It’s amazing to me how the NCAA can fully reinstate Penn State and restore full scholarships and remove post season bans, after all of the disgraceful things that the University knowingly allowed to go on, but somehow can’t lift a ban from Southern for missing APR data from 10 years ago. Even after all the corrections and changes Southern has made to correct issues given the limited resources they have, and a State that continues to cut funding. I guess if you can’t pay your way out you can’t get out.
