Jackson State Pulls Away From Alcorn State

JACKSON, Miss. — LeAntwan Luckett scored all of his 14 points in the second half Saturday to help lead Jackson State to a 64-54 comeback win over Alcorn State.

Marquis Vance also scored 14 for the Braves (3-12, 2-1), who were outrebounded 50-26.

Alcorn led 23-16 after a free throw by Tamarico Wilson, but Jackson State rallied and Derrell Taylor made a layup at the buzzer to give the Tigers a 25-23 halftime lead. Alcorn State shot 23.1 percent from the field and Jackson state 34.6 percent.

Behind Luckett, Alcorn State rallied in the second half to build a 49-45 lead with 7:05 left and pull away 62-54 with 2:35 to go.

Raeford Worsham led Jackson State (3-13, 1-2) with 19 points, Taylor had 17 with 10 rebounds, and Kaven Bernard had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Alabama A&M def Mississippi Valley State 86-73

ITTA BENA, Miss. — In a fast-paced, highlight filled matched between Alabama A&M and Mississippi Valley State on Saturday night, the Bulldogs escaped the Mississippi delta with their second conference win of the season.

The Bulldogs upended the Delta Devils, 86-73, at the Leflore County Civic Center in the first home SWAC game of the season for Valley (2-13, 1-1 SWAC).

Jordan Washington scored a career high 22 points to lead the Delta Devils while freshman forward Rakwan Kelly put up 13 off the bench.

Washington made 4-of-8 three point attempts and have 18 points in the first half. Isaac Williams, a sophomore transfer from Barton Community College, chipped in 11 points.

“Despite the loss, there were some good things that happened for us tonight,” said MVSU head coach Andre Payne. “We have some work to do, and hopefully we can keep building and become a better team as the season goes along.”

After trailing most of the first half, MVSU took the lead near the 17-minute mark in the second half following a DeAngleo Priar layup that pushed Valley’s lead to 47-46.

After a Williams layup gave the Delta Devils a 49-48 advantage, the Bulldogs ran off with the lead to escape with the victory.

Ladarius Tabb had 31 points for Alabama A&M (4-9, 2-1), who also got 15 points from Nicholas West.

A&M made its living from the free throw line, converting 24-of-31 shots from the charity stripe. Meanwhile, the Delta Devils made 11-of-16 free throws.

The Delta Devils will be back at home Monday at the Leflore County Civic Center, hosting Alabama State.

Southern def Grambling State 59-53

GRAMBLING, La. — Jared Sam and Tre Lynch combined for 29 points as Southern University held on to beat Grambling State 59-53 on Saturday night.

Sam finished with 16 points and Lynch had 13 for Southern (5-11, 2-1).

The Jaguars, which picked up their first road win of the season, held a 30-20 lead at the half and were ahead 49-31 midway of the second period.

That’s when the Tigers came charging back as Jefkins Agyeman-Budu nailed a 3-point jumper to start an 18-5 run and Grambling closed to 53-49 with two minutes left.

Christopher Hyder stole the ball and drove for a layup and Sam hit a jumper to give Southern a 57-51 lead with 37 seconds remaining to seal the win.

Mark Gray scored 14 and Chase Cormier had 10 for Grambling (2-11, 0-3).

Texas Southern def Prairie View 81-77

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas — Malcom Riley drove for a layup and made six free throws in the final 1:12 to secure Texas Southern’s 81-77 victory over Prairie View A&M on Saturday night.

Prairie View would not fold down the stretch as John Brisco nailed two consecutive treys to close to 80-77 with 3 seconds remaining. Chris Thomas and Deverell Biggs made the final three free throws to stave off the Panthers.

Prairie View led 59-54 with 8:13 left in the second half. Riley, Madarious Gibbs and Jason Cartermade free throws to give Texas Southern a 65-61 lead with 3:56 remaining.

Gibbs had 21 points, Thomas added 18, Riley finished with 13 and Biggs had 12 for Texas Southern (6-10, 3-0).

Montrael Scott scored 22 points and Tre Hagood and Jayrn Johnson added 11 apiece for Prairie View (2-14, 0-3).
