DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – -Anthony Jordan rushed for 102 yards and two touchdowns as No. 17/18 Bethune-Cookman celebrated homecoming with a 49-12 victory over Howard before 10,247 at Municipal Stadium.
The Wildcats (5-1 overall, 2-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) scored on their first three possessions and four of their first five – the only “stop” came when time ran out in the first half – to remain unbeaten (5-0) on homecoming in the Brian Jenkins era.
Jordan also caught three passes for 45 yards for the Wildcats, who amassed a season-high 440 total yards.
Howard (1-6, 0-4) and conference-leading quarterback Greg McGhee had some success moving the ball, but the Wildcat defense stepped up in the red zone.
In their first five red zone drives, the Bison had to settle for two John Fleck field goals, missed another field goal attempt and fumbled the ball away. When Howard did score a touchdown on a one-yard McGhee keeper with 13:34 remaining in the third quarter, Bethune-Cookman quickly answered when Jordan scooted 79 yards for a touchdown on the Wildcats’ first play from scrimmage.
Cary White and Quentin Williams scored first-half rushing touchdowns for the Wildcats. Williams completed six of nine passes for 114 yards before yielding to Larry Brihm, who threw a 24-yard touchdown to Jhomo Gordon and scored on a 2-yard keeper in the fourth quarter.
Jamaruz Thompkins (Eight carries for 54 yards) closed out the scoring on a 2-yard run with nine seconds left.
Defensively, Erik Williams had 11 tackles and recovered the fumble that ended one Howard scoring threat. LeBrandon Richardson contributed two sacks.
On special teams, Drexler Dixon had a 69-yard kickoff return and Frank Brown a 53-yard punt return, each setting up a Wildcat touchdown.
