Head coach Harold Jackson has not wavered in support for his embattled quarterback.
Redshirt sophomore LaMontiez Ivy has committed seven turnovers in losses to Tennessee State and Grambling State.
During the two-game slide, Ivy has thrown five interceptions and fumbled twice, including a failed spike attempt in the waning seconds of JSU’s 40-35 loss to Grambling.
Ivy has completed 59.9 percent of passes, thrown for 1,054 yards to go along with eight touchdowns and seven interceptions.
“We have a young quarterback who has not really played,” Jackson said Monday. He’s really a freshman. This is about his fifth week of training camp.”
Ivy suffered a season-ending leg injury in the 2013 opener against Tulane – a setback that Jackson has contributed to the early struggles.
“(Ivy) spent most of the (offseason) rehabbing,” Jackson said. “We have to bring him along slowly.”
With JSU set to embark on a three-game stretch against Arkansas Pine-Bluff, Prairie View and Mississippi Valley State who are a combined 2-8, the first-year head coach said it is no time for Ivy to dwell on his inconsistent play.
“I’ve talked to him, and told him he can’t get down on himself,” Jackson said. “We’ve put a saddle on him and we’re gonna ride this young man to the end.”
