In an interview with the Heritage Sports Network, SWAC Commissioner Duer Sharp addressed the league’s transition to holding championship events in Houston, APR and the upcoming 2014 football season.
About the SWAC basketball tournament:
“It created a $50 million in economic impact for the city of Houston,” Sharp said. “I was surprised. Anytime you can hold it in an downtown NBA arena anything is possible.”
About the SWAC basketball tournament molding itself after the CIAA tournament:
“I hope so,” he said. “That’s the first place I looked at. How could we put a SWAC flavor on that?”
On the SWAC football championship game:
“We want it be like a SWAC homecoming game,” he said.
Sharp also praised the attendance during the Southern-Jackson State game saying both schools “did an outstanding job of bringing fans to the game.”
About APR:
“We are trending and trending upward,” Sharp said. “I have faith in our athletic directors. I hate for any school to be on a postseason ban.”
