A check of the MEAC football standings on the eve of conference play finds an unlikely team at the top.
Morgan State, yes, those Bears, are 5-1 — putting together their best start since 2009. What once looked like a promising start has become a compelling story about a program gaining confidence and learning how to win close games that they didn’t a year ago.
Morgan State’s latest statement came Saturday, when the Bears rallied to defeat Robert Morris 28-27 during homecoming. It was the Bears’ fourth consecutive win and put them — at least temporarily — in first place in the MEAC.
The win over Robert Morris followed an equally dramatic 38-35 win over Villanova on Oct. 3.
How Morgan State has done it
Cameron Edge has become the centerpiece of Morgan State’s offensive resurgence.
Against Villanova, the senior quarterback completed 31 of 40 passes for 444 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for two scores, including the game-winning two-yard touchdown with 36 seconds remaining.
His 444 passing yards ranked third in Morgan State history for a single game.

Through six games, Edge has thrown for 1,337 yards and 11 touchdowns, establishing himself as one of the most productive quarterbacks for an offense that has struggled to match the strength of the defense in recent years.
Wide receiver Justin Perry has emerged as a leading target, recording 451 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Joseph Towler has added 327 receiving yards and four touchdowns, providing another explosive option.
The Bears are averaging 31 points and 374.2 total yards per game.
Can Morgan State contend in the MEAC?
Head coach Damon Wilson has emphasized building a competitive championship program.
The Bears must now prove their early success translates to MEAC competition. Their remaining schedule will test whether the offense can maintain its production and the defense can improve against quality opponents.
After a final non-conference game versus Tennessee State, Morgan State opens the MEAC slate with Howard before a tough slate that features defending conference champion South Carolina State, 2025 MEAC runner-up Delaware State, and an improving Norfolk State team before wrapping the regular season at always tough North Carolina Central.
If the Bears can survive that stretch, it be right in the thick of the race.
So the answer would be yes to the question of whether they can contend.
“I just want to win. So whatever it takes to win,” Wilson said. “But the one thing that I know in life, when you’re faced with adversity, your true character comes out, and I think we’ve been facing adversity a number of times this year, and our true character came out. That says a lot.”
